The Compass Center offers internships in faith-based, social justice and nonprofit organizations both within The Compass Center and in the greater Indianapolis area. These are opportunities to explore and discover work that is meaningful to you both personally and professionally.
Ideal internship candidates are juniors and seniors. As part of the internship, The Compass Center will provide opportunities for exploring meaning and purpose through cohort conversations, using the internship as an opportunity to reflect on the intern’s future direction and decisions.

Position Title: Butler Catholic Community Communications Intern
Introduction to the Butler Catholic Community
The Butler Catholic Community is a direct outreach of the Young Adult & College Campus Ministry Office of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. For decades, the Archdiocese has supported the mission, vision, and purpose of the Butler Catholic Community. We serve the 1,000+ Catholic students on Butler’s campus, as well as many Catholic faculty and staff. Our mission, guided by Jesus Christ and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is to provide an intentional community of faith where students can encounter the love of Jesus Christ and grow in discipleship through the Sacraments, prayer, fellowship, and service to others.
The Communications Internship position supports the mission of the Butler Catholic Community within the communications, marketing and graphic design functional areas. The intern will engage in the work of communication through digital outreach, and marketing. Depending on the level of experience, the intern may take a project from start to finish, or participate in many projects to contribute to the department’s overall work process. By the end of the experience, the intern will have added meaningful work samples to his/her portfolio. This internship is customizable to the intern’s interests, whether that be writing, graphic design, photography, videography or a combination thereof.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Graphic Design: This position will assist in the production of design materials for the BCC. Responsibilities may include working on the production of materials using Adobe Suite, or Canva, upcoming events via print (e.g., posters, flyers, handouts, ads, signage) and electronic (website, flocknote, social media) channels. As well, this position may participate in other aspects of the work flow: planning, concepts, design and output .
Communications: This position will help with several communication channels to current and potential members of the BCC. Some activities will include assisting with the drafting and management of social media communications, weekly flock note, monthly newsletters, and other special projects.
Marketing: This position may assist in the development of marketing plans, including but not limited to establishing relationships with students in the BCC through social media and contacting new students via several different communication channels.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled as a full-time student at Butler University. Seeking a degree in Visual Communications, Marketing, or Graphic Design is preferred.
- Proficient computer graphics skills in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva is preferred.
- An ability to manage time and multi-task.
- Good verbal communications skills.
- Available 6 hours per week from September 3-December 13, 2024 (not including Fall Break or Thanksgiving Break).
- Compensation is $14/hour.
- Photography and/or videography experience a plus.
- General understanding of the Catholic Faith preferred.

The internship at CIC will provide Butler students with the opportunity to explore their professional and spiritual journey by engaging with representatives from religiously diverse communities. Students will broaden their religious literacy while strengthening their skills in non-profit administration and program development by attending staff, board, and executive committee meetings, and by helping to plan, promote, and facilitate meetings, programs, and community events. Students will identify specific goals to learn about non-profit administration, program development, or interfaith research. Throughout the experience, interns will develop a portfolio reflecting on their goals detailing key learnings.
An ideal candidate will be able to take initiative while receiving support. They will bring a commitment to fostering interfaith understanding, respect for diversity, and strong written and verbal communication skills. Some experience in event planning and communication would be helpful.
Internship Specifications: Interns are expected to work 10-12 hours a week during Fall Butler semester. Interns are paid $14 hour. The Intern will keep a weekly journal; meet regularly with the center director during the course of the internship and Interns are required to write one 250-500 word blog or personal essay about the experience at the end of the internship. Interns will participate in vocational reflection conversations with other Compass Center interns as part of the paid internship during the semester.

Communications Intern
Build/strengthen a portfolio and/or resume to reflect strong skills in communication, collaboration, leadership, initiative, and creativity.
Responsibilities:
- Create digital and print content and regularly schedule communications using The Digest, TCC Newsletters, poster creation and distribution.
- Edit Compass Communications Podcast videos in advance of posting on Butler YouTube by Web Marketing department.
- Develop and produce digital content on social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Photocircle using Adobe Suite and Canva.
- Design posters and other print communications materials.
- Provide coverage of the house during office hours offering hospitality and information as needed.
- Staff the Butler University Series on Religion and Society and a New View Film Series twice a semester (dependent upon class schedule)
- Network within student organizations, TCC Scholar cohort, to promote TCC events.
- Collaborate with TCC interfaith interns on program support and implementation as communications intern.
- Contribute blogs for Compass Center blog page.
- Actively participate in weekly staff meetings with TCC Team offering creative input and marketing support for inter-campus communications.
- The opportunity to build an intern specific project that further enhances the work of the Center.
- Represent the Center at tabling events including Admissions and Job Fairs.
Qualifications:
- Majoring or minoring in Strategic Communications
- Competencies in operating social media platforms
- Knowledge of Canva, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Teams
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated interest and experience in campus programming especially related to diverse groups
- Active interest in faith life and/or discernment of purpose.
- Enthusiasm for connecting within the Butler Community through a proactive approach to service.
Position Title: Communications Intern

As a community center, nearly 1,000 people visit the JCC daily to work out, drop their children off for preschool or afterschool or participate in an arts program. We have about 3,800 member households and have been in existence for more than 100 years. As well, this position may participate in other aspects of the work flow: planning, concepts, design and output .
Communications: This position will help with several communication channels to current and potential members of the JCC. Some activities will include assisting with the drafting and management of social media communications, e-blasts, magazine communications, and press releases.
Marketing: This position may assist in the development of marketing plans, including but not limited to establishing relationships with JCC members through social media and contacting new and existing customers via several different communication channels. This position is responsible for tracking the progress of their marketing efforts and encouraged to identify new marketing strategies.
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in a college program, junior or senior level status. Seeking a degree in Visual Communications, Marketing, or Graphic Design is preferred.
- Strong portfolio and proficient computer graphics skills in Adobe Creative Suite (particularly InDesign and PhotoShop) is preferred.
- An ability to manage time and multi-task.
- Good verbal communications skills.
- Available 10-12 hours a week from September 5-December 8, 2023 (not including Fall Break or Thanksgiving Break).

Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic – Legal Services and Operations Intern
Description: The intern will be supervised by Executive Director, Erin Hall and Senior Director of Legal Services, Liz Fiscus. The intern will assist the Clinic’s leadership with a variety of projects related to the four program areas to include Housing and Consumer Justice, Immigrant and Survivor Justice, Tax and Economic Justice and Re-entry Justice. We implemented a strategic plan in 2022 for all our program areas and the intern will have opportunities to assist in program level legal operations projects in furtherance of our plan objectives as well as direct legal services experiences and paralegal work assignments. Additionally, the intern will be involved in daily non-profit operations and there are opportunities to participate in business discussions including development work. The internship will take place at the Clinic’s main office, located at the Trinity Outreach Center, at 3333 N Meridian Street.
Goals: The goal of this program is to introduce the intern to the inner workings of the poverty law sector as well as that of a faith-based nonprofit, providing an understanding of the Clinic’s prophetic call to “Seek justice, defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow (Isaiah 1:17).”
Qualifications: Sophomores, juniors, or seniors of all majors are welcome. Candidates must have good listening and communication skills, the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and be attentive to detail/accuracy. Students should be well-organized, independent workers and have good written and verbal skills.
Internship Expectations: The intern is expected to work 10-12 hours a week during the 2023 Fall semester, will be compensated $14 per hour, and will be required to write a 250-500 word blog or personal essay about the experience at the completion of the internship. The intern will participate in vocational reflection conversations with other CFV interns as part of the paid internship during the semester.

About Youth Ministries at Second Presbyterian

Position Description
The Youth Ministry Intern will work with youth, ranging from 6th through 12th grades, under the supervision of the Director of Youth and Families and as a member of the youth ministries team, seeking to understand and address the spiritual and social needs of youth and their families. This part-time position (10-12 hours/week at $14/hour) allows an individual to explore and experience the vocation of youth ministry while offering their unique gifts, perspective, and ideas to the youth ministries team.
Roles and Responsibilities
Mentorship
- Under the support and guidance of the youth ministries team, the Youth Ministry Intern will make intentional efforts to connect with, reach out to, and build mentoring relationships with middle school and high school students.
- Provide a safe and life-affirming space for all youth to fully engage with others, offer mutual support, explore their spirituality, and develop a confident sense of self.
- Initiate time with students one-on-one, in small group settings, and/or large group events.
Programming
- In collaboration with the youth ministries team, the Youth Ministry Intern will plan, lead, and execute weekly programming opportunities (i.e., Wednesday night youth group, Sunday school, confirmation, and/or senior capstone).
- Under the support and guidance of the youth ministries team, the Youth Ministry Intern will choose a major event of interest (i.e., bonfire and hayride, fall retreat, Ugly Sweater Party, etc.) to plan, lead, and execute.
Congregational Integration
- The Youth Ministry Intern will choose an area of ministry focus (i.e., communications, marketing, pastoral care, education, worship, music and fine arts, children’s ministry, young adult ministry, etc.) in which youth ministries is working integratively to observe and explore ministry within the broader context of the congregation.
Leadership
- The Youth Ministry Intern will engage in a variety of leadership opportunities and experiences with time for intentional discussion, reflection, and integration. (i.e., weekly youth ministry team meetings, meetings with Senior Pastor and Associate Pastors, leadership seminars with congregational leaders, attendance and participation in various staff and congregational meetings.)
