Paid Internships through The Compass Center
The Compass Center offers internships in faith-based, social justice and non-profit organizations both within The Compass Center and in the greater Indianapolis area. These are opportunities to explore and discover work that is meaningful to you both personally and professionally.
Ideal internship candidates are juniors and seniors. As part of the internship, The Compass Center will provide opportunities for exploring meaning and purpose through cohort conversations, using the internship as an opportunity to reflect on the intern’s future direction and decisions.
Internships qualify for Indianapolis Community Requirement (ICR). Contact Center for Citizenship and Community for more information.
Note: Only fully enrolled Butler University students are eligible to apply for internships through The Compass Center.
Paid internships begin on the first day of classes and conclude on last day of classes. Interns do not work on Spring Break.
Available internships
Responsibilities
- Developing and producing digital content (graphic design, photography, video editing) for social media platforms Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok using Canva/Adobe.
- Provide regularly scheduled communications using The Digest, Butler Newsletter platform in conjunction with Butler University Marketing department (weekly newsletters).
- Design posters and other print communications materials.
- Table at the Butler University Series on Religion and Society and A New View Film Series twice a semester (dependent upon class schedule).
- Actively participate in biweekly staff meetings with TCC Team offering creative input for inter-campus communications and taking meeting minutes.
- The opportunity to build an intern-specific project that further enhances the work of the Center.
- Participating in vocational reflection conversations with other Compass Center interns.
- Managing social media accounts for The Compass Center within the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division, including contributing to the Division campaigns.
- Participate in the Compass Center Vocational Discernment & Professional Development Intern Cohort, which meets once per month at The Compass Center.
Hours and compensation
- The communications intern is slated to work 10–12 hours per week.
- $14/hour
Qualifications
- Majoring or minoring in Strategic Communications.
- Knowledge of managing social media platform and marketing strategy.
- Skilled in use of Canva, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Teams.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proactive communication skills and ability to balance multiple projects at once.
- Demonstrated interest and experience in campus programming, especially related to diverse groups.
- Active interest in discernment of purpose and faith/spiritual life.
- Enthusiasm for connecting within the Butler Community through a proactive approach to service.

Responsibilities
The internship at CIC will provide Butler students with the opportunity to explore their professional and spiritual journeys by engaging with representatives from religiously diverse communities. Students will broaden their religious literacy while strengthening their skills in non-profit administration and program development by:
- Attending staff, board, and executive committee meetings.
- Helping to plan, promote, and facilitate meetings, programs, and community events.
- Students will identify specific goals to learn about non-profit administration, program development, or interfaith research. Throughout the experience, interns will develop a portfolio reflecting on their goals detailing key learnings.
- Keeping a weekly journal and meeting with the program director during the course of the internship.
- Writing one 200–500 word blog or personal essay at the conclusion of the internship.
- Participate in the Compass Center Vocational Discernment & Professional Development Intern Cohort, which meets once per month at The Compass Center.
Qualifications
An ideal candidate will be able to take initiative while receiving support. They will bring a commitment to fostering interfaith understanding, respect for diversity, and strong written and verbal communication skills. Some experience in event planning and communication would be helpful.

Responsibilities
The Just Peace Intern will be supervised by Rev. Dr. Sarah Lund, Senior Pastor of historic First Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC) and assist the congregation in living out its commitment to be Just Peace church, fulfilling the principles of racial justice, mental health justice, economic justice, food justice, environmental justice, and LGBTQ justice. This internship will take place at First Congregational UCC located at 7171 N. Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, with the possibility of working with the national UCC Justice and Witness offices in Washington, DC. The Just Peace Intern will:
- Work in partnership with the Pastor, staff, congregation leaders, and community partners such as Faith In Indiana to engage in peacemaking and justice work.
- Write one 250–500 word blog or personal essay about the experience at the completion of the internship.
- Participate in the Compass Center Vocational Discernment & Professional Development Intern Cohort, which meets once per month at The Compass Center.
- The goal of this program is to introduce the Just Peace Intern to the national Just Peace movement as part of the United Church of Christ, provide a deeper understanding of the faith communities’ prophetic call, and gain leadership experience in the work of peace and justice.
Qualifications
The candidate must be a sophomore, junior, or senior and have the desire/ability to learn quickly, work one on one with others, lead small groups, multi-task, strong communication skills, and be open to people of various faith traditions.

- The intern is slated to work 12 hours per week during the fall semester.

Responsibilities
The intern will be supervised by Executive Director Erin Hall and Director of Housing and Consumer Justice Bryan Fisher. The internship will take place at the Clinic’s main office, located at the Trinity Outreach Center, at 3333 N. Meridian Street.
The intern will:
- Assist the Clinic’s leadership with a variety of projects related to the five program areas to include Housing and Consumer Justice, Immigrant and Survivor Justice, Tax and Economic Justice, Re-entry Justice, and Veterans’ Services.
- Assist in program level legal operations projects in furtherance of our legal service plan objectives as well as direct legal services experiences and paralegal work assignments, such as subject matter research and client/community communications.
- Potential to engage in daily non-profit operations and there are opportunities to participate in business discussions including development work.
- Write a 250–500 word blog or personal essay about the experience at the completion of the internship
- Participate in the Compass Center Vocational Discernment & Professional Development Intern Cohort, which meets once per month at The Compass Center.
Goals
The goal of this program is to introduce the intern to the inner workings of the poverty law sector as well as that of a faith-based nonprofit, providing an understanding of the Clinic’s prophetic call to “Seek justice, defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow” (Isaiah 1:17).
Qualifications
Sophomores, juniors, or seniors of all majors are welcome. Candidates must have good listening and communication skills, the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, and be attentive to detail/accuracy. Students should be well-organized, independent workers and have good written and verbal skills.

The Communications Intern position supports the mission of the Butler Catholic Community within the communications, marketing, and graphic design functional areas. The intern will engage in the work of communication through digital outreach and marketing. Depending on the level of experience, the intern may take a project from start to finish, or participate in many projects to contribute to the department’s overall work process. By the end of the experience, the intern will have added meaningful work samples to his/her portfolio. This internship is customizable to the intern’s interests, whether that be writing, graphic design, photography, videography, or a combination thereof.
Responsibilities
Graphic Design: This position will assist in the production of design materials for the BCC. Responsibilities may include working on the production of materials using Adobe Suite, or Canva, upcoming events via print (e.g., posters, flyers, handouts, ads, signage) and electronic (website, flocknote, social media) channels. As well, this position may participate in other aspects of the work flow: planning, concepts, design, and output.
Communications: This position will help with several communication channels to current and potential members of the BCC. Some activities will include assisting with the drafting and management of social media communications, weekly flock note, monthly newsletters, and other special projects.
Marketing: This position may assist in the development of marketing plans, including but not limited to establishing relationships with students in the BCC through social media and contacting new students via several different communication channels.
Participate in the Compass Center Vocational Discernment & Professional Development Intern Cohort, which meets once per month at The Compass Center.
Qualifications
- Enrolled as a full-time student at Butler University. Seeking a degree in Visual Communications, Marketing, or Graphic Design is preferred.
- Proficient computer graphics skills in Adobe Creative Suite and Canva is preferred.
- An ability to manage time and multi-task.
- Good verbal communications skills.
- Photography and/or videography experience is a plus.
- General understanding of the Catholic Faith preferred.
Hours and compensation
- The intern will work seven hours per week during the fall semester.
- $14/hour
