Paid Internships through The Compass Center
The Compass Center offers internships in faith-based, social justice and nonprofit organizations both within The Compass Center and in the greater Indianapolis area. These are opportunities to explore and discover work that is meaningful to you both personally and professionally.
Ideal internship candidates are juniors and seniors. As part of the internship, The Compass Center will provide opportunities for exploring meaning and purpose through cohort conversations, using the internship as an opportunity to reflect on the intern’s future direction and decisions.
Internships will run from beginning to end of each semester for 10–12 hours per week at $14.00 per hour. Interns are required to write one 250–500-word blog or personal essay about the experience at the end of the internship.
Internships qualify for Indianapolis Community Requirement (ICR). Contact Center for Citizenship and Community for more information.
Note: Only fully enrolled Butler University students are eligible to apply for internships through The Compass Center.

Available Internships
The internship at CIC will provide Butler students with the opportunity to explore their professional and spiritual journey by engaging with representatives from religiously diverse communities. Students will broaden their religious literacy while strengthening their skills in non-profit administration and program development by attending staff, board, and executive committee meetings, and by helping to plan, promote, and facilitate meetings, programs, and community events. Students will identify specific goals to learn about non-profit administration, program development, or interfaith research. Throughout the experience, interns will develop a portfolio reflecting on their goals detailing key learnings.
An ideal candidate will be able to take initiative while receiving support. They will bring a commitment to fostering interfaith understanding, respect for diversity, and strong written and verbal communication skills. Some experience in event planning and communication would be helpful.
Internship Specifications: Interns are expected to work 10-12 hours a week during Fall Butler semester. Interns are paid $14 hour. The Intern will keep a weekly journal; meet regularly with the center director during the course of the internship and Interns are required to write one 250-500 word blog or personal essay about the experience at the end of the internship. Interns will participate in vocational reflection conversations with other Compass Center interns as part of the paid internship during the semester.

About Youth Ministries at Second Presbyterian

Position Description
The Youth Ministry Intern will work with youth, ranging from 6th through 12th grades, under the supervision of the Director of Youth and Families and as a member of the youth ministries team, seeking to understand and address the spiritual and social needs of youth and their families. This part-time position (10-12 hours/week at $14/hour) allows an individual to explore and experience the vocation of youth ministry while offering their unique gifts, perspective, and ideas to the youth ministries team.
Roles and Responsibilities
Mentorship
- Under the support and guidance of the youth ministries team, the Youth Ministry Intern will make intentional efforts to connect with, reach out to, and build mentoring relationships with middle school and high school students.
- Provide a safe and life-affirming space for all youth to fully engage with others, offer mutual support, explore their spirituality, and develop a confident sense of self.
- Initiate time with students one-on-one, in small group settings, and/or large group events.
Programming
- In collaboration with the youth ministries team, the Youth Ministry Intern will plan, lead, and execute weekly programming opportunities (i.e., Wednesday night youth group, Sunday school, confirmation, and/or senior capstone).
- Under the support and guidance of the youth ministries team, the Youth Ministry Intern will choose a major event of interest (i.e., bonfire and hayride, fall retreat, Ugly Sweater Party, etc.) to plan, lead, and execute.
Congregational Integration
- The Youth Ministry Intern will choose an area of ministry focus (i.e., communications, marketing, pastoral care, education, worship, music and fine arts, children’s ministry, young adult ministry, etc.) in which youth ministries is working integratively to observe and explore ministry within the broader context of the congregation.
Leadership
- The Youth Ministry Intern will engage in a variety of leadership opportunities and experiences with time for intentional discussion, reflection, and integration. (i.e., weekly youth ministry team meetings, meetings with Senior Pastor and Associate Pastors, leadership seminars with congregational leaders, attendance and participation in various staff and congregational meetings.)
