The department congratulates these participants and their achievements.
Bulldogs at JMM2021!
The JMM 2021 meeting is being held virtually, and two Butler University students will be presenting posters at the session.
- Chloe Makdad is presenting a poster on the Extension Theorem for Functions on Bicomplex Numbers. The poster session is being held Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 3:00-5:00 PM. https://meetings.ams.org/math/jmm2021/meetingapp.cgi/Session/2949
- Heather Baldacci is presenting a poster on “Kamila Clutering for a Mixed-Type Data Analysis of Illinois Medicare Data”. The poster session will be held on Friday, January 8, 2021, from 6:00-8:00 PM. https://meetings.ams.org/math/jmm2021/meetingapp.cgi/Session/2949
We would love for all to join the session to view their presentations.
Congratulations to Chloe Makdad
Goldwater Scholarship Recipient
The Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Department would like to congratulate Chloe Makdad, a sophomore mathematics, statistics, and computer science major for being named our most recent Goldwater Scholarship recipient.
The Goldwater Scholarship is the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering in America. According to the Goldwater Foundation, 396 college students from across the U.S. were selected to receive the scholarship from an estimated pool of more than 5,000 college sophomores and juniors. A total of 1,343 natural science, engineering, and mathematics students were nominated by 461 academic institutions to compete for the 2020 Goldwater scholarships. Of students who reported, 191 of the Scholars are men, 203 are women, and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their highest degree objective. Fifty Scholars are mathematics and computer science majors, 287 are majoring in the natural sciences, and 59 are majoring in engineering. Many of the Scholars have published their research in leading journals and have presented their work at professional society conferences.
Congratulations, Chloe!
No Actuarial Science events have been scheduled for the Spring 2021 semester yet!
What is Mathematics Research Camp (MRC)?
This is an annual one-week research opportunity available to Majors in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science. Each participant will work on an original research problem with a Butler faculty member and prepare a poster presentation for the end-of-the-week poster session. Projects are available for students at any level of the major, so anyone interested should apply. If you are curious about what Mathematics research looks like, this is your chance to find out first hand. If you are an experienced researcher looking for a new direction to explore, this could be a great opportunity to sample a new area.
When is it?
We always hold camp in August, before classes begin.
Is there a cost?
There is no cost to the students for participating, and we also cover your meals during the week. You just need to be on campus during the event. (If you live in on-campus housing, we have typically worked with Residence Life to allow early move-in.) If you would only be able to participate virtually, please indicate that on your application.
What is expected of participants?
If you are a student participant at MRC, you will need to work closely with your faculty mentor and commit to this project during the time you are at Mathematics Research Camp. Some students go on to present their results at conferences, and some students use their results to start an honors or departmental thesis. But some students use MRC as a self-contained research opportunity since their course load does not give them time during the regular semester to do research. Where this project goes beyond MRC is up to you and your mentor.
Please contact Dr. Amber Russell (acrusse3@butler.edu), Dr. Becky Wahl (rwahl@butler.edu), or Ms. Rena Duerksen (rduerkse@butler.edu) for application information.
Each year, Butler University’s Mathematics Association of America (MAA) chapter hosts a scavenger hunt on campus for local high school students. This event offers students the chance to utilize mathematical concepts they have learned in the classroom in a fun way. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has been cancelled. We currently do not know if this event will continue in years to come.
