DEI & Intercultural Development


CCOM students will develop key knowledge, skills, abilities, and perspectives to be effective in diverse workplaces and communities. Students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds will be valued and included equitably in our college, will flourish in their respective roles, will continue life-long intercultural development, and will be empowered to act in support of diversity, inclusion, equity, and intercultural development.

Our vision has three key areas of focus:

  1. Culture and Intercultural Orientation
  2. Community
  3. Student Access and Success

Key Definitions

  • Diversity is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.
  • Inclusion is involvement and empowerment, where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized. An inclusive college promotes and sustains a sense of belonging; it values and practices respect for the talents, beliefs, backgrounds, and ways of living of its members.
  • Equity refers to achieving parity in student educational outcomes, regardless of background and identity.
  • Intercultural Development is learning focused on providing the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities.

Key Area 1: Culture and Intercultural Orientation

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and board members each play key roles in creating a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and intercultural development in CCOM and interact in positive partnership. Students, faculty, and staff in CCOM will continue to enhance knowledge, skills, abilities, and perspectives to engage better in an effective, ethical, and appropriate manner with various people in the college, workplaces, and communities.

Students, faculty, and staff in the CCOM community represent a diverse range of social and cultural identities, backgrounds, and experiences.

Key Area 3: Student, Faculty, and Staff Access and Success

Students, faculty, and staff from marginalized and underrepresented backgrounds will flourish in CCOM.
