The MLLC Blueprint

Listed below are some important steps for getting the most out of your language degree.

  1. Learn what you can do with a Foreign Language, and why it is important. (visit www.butler.edu/mllc
  2. Meet with a faculty member in the MLLC to discuss the best path for you.  Are you interested in meeting the language requirement, adding a minor, adding a secondary language major, or declaring a multilingual major?  To make a change to your academic plan, visit the Dean’s office JH237 and fill out the simple form.
  3. Determine your placement by taking a language placement exam.  Request it at  https://www.butler.edu/mllc/placement-exam-request 
  4. Learn about placement credits, AP/IB credits, and dual enrollment credits that can help you meet your goals quicker.  Visit https://www.butler.edu/mllc/placement 
  5. Visit CaPS for various career prep services and opportunities https://www.butler.edu/career.
    • Complete assessments that will help you discover your natural skills, interests, and talents.
    • Develop and enhance your resume for job opportunities while you are a student.  Continually update your resume with experiences.
    • Utilize Handshake for on and off campus job searching.
    • Create a LinkedIn profile and link with peers and faculty.
    • Connect with 3rd and 4th year students to learn about co-curricular experiences.
    • Attend networking events to learn about co-curricular and internship opportunities without the pressure to apply.

  2. Consider summer language courses to speed up your progress and maintain your skills.
  3. Learn about the multiple opportunities to study abroad, with options to choose from every year and every semester.  The GALA program and the Semester in Spain program are great semester-long choices or for short term study during the early summer, consider Bulldogs to Berlin, Costa Rica Spanish Immersion, and French Immersion in Quebec City. The Semester in DC internship is a good choice during junior year.  See your options at:  https://www.butler.edu/global-education 
  4. Join the appropriate language club and increase involvement yearly by holding a position and organizing events.
  5. Participate in Modern Language Center events offered multiple times throughout each semester.
  6. Create a language e-portfolio and add to it after each language course, ultimately preparing for higher/highest distinction in the department at graduation.  https://www.butler.edu/mllc/eportfolio 
  7. Take advantage of opportunities to volunteer on campus and in the community practicing the language and getting to know other cultures.  Visit the Indy Global Village, participate in The International Center events, volunteer at the Indiana Latino Institute for Spanish, or help out the RX students by acting as a foreign language speaking patient during their role-playing exercises.   

As a junior or senior:

  1. Once you have completed at least two 300-level courses in your language, verify that you have received any potential Butler Language Placement Credits.  https://www.butler.edu/mllc/placement-credits.  
  2. Consider participating in the Indy Summer Experience https://www.butler.edu/career/ise and the Butler Summer Institute https://www.butler.edu/chase/butlersummerinstitute.
  3. Look into possible internships and academic research opportunities, both within the MLLC and the University  https://www.butler.edu/career/students-graduates/internships-jobs.
  4. Consider adding a thesis to earn the highest departmental distinction at graduation.  Research topics, secure an advisor. https://www.butler.edu/honors/honors-thesis 
  5. Revisit the requirements for your major/minor with a language advisor and determine if the next step is attainable.  
  6. Revisit options for study abroad with language immersion, including grad school opportunities.
  7. Consider attending a national language conference and presenting work.
  8. Enroll in the FL499 keystone course and take the STAMP exam to determine eligibility for the Global Seal of Biliteracy.  https://www.butler.edu/mllc/senior-keystone 
  9. Consider presenting at the Butler Undergraduate Research Conference. https://www.butler.edu/urc 
  10. If comfortable, volunteer to tutor language students.
  11. Revisit CaPS to update resume, Handshake profile, and LinkedIn; refine interviewing skills, discuss postgraduate plans including grad school, fellowships, and job opportunities.  Consider Fulbright, Peace Corps, and teaching assistantships abroad.  CaPS can also help with salary and benefit negotiation.  https://www.butler.edu/career 
  12. Complete the CaPS post-graduate survey on Handshake just prior to graduation, and continually update employment or continuing education status.
