History, Anthropology, & Classics
You Belong Here.
Follow your passion into the past through History, across the globe through Anthropology, and into the Ancient World through Classics.

Butler has the only undergraduate department in the United States that integrates History, Anthropology, and Classics in its curricula. When you join our students and faculty, you join a community with a unique approach to navigating a complex and ever-changing world.
You will learn to think critically, write and speak effectively, develop research methods, unpack theory, and build connections across diverse communities. Students engage in internships, research, fieldwork, and study abroad opportunities. Whether you venture into the workforce or attend graduate school, our programs prepare you for your future.
You can major or minor in History, Anthropology, or Classics. Don’t want to be limited to one area of study? Our department offers combined History/Anthropology and History/Classics majors as well as majors that partner with Political Science, Religion, and Psychology. We also offer interdisciplinary minors in Museum Studies, Asian Studies, and Geography and Global Societies.
Beyond the Classroom

Study Abroad
Butler offers short-term summer and semester-long programs (many led by our faculty!) as well as additional destinations through our partner institution and verified third-party providers. We are also proud to provide scholarship opportunities through our Department.

Internships
From department-based internships to interning for one of our Indianapolis community partners to summer or abroad positions, our students have the opportunity to gain professional experience as undergraduates preparing themselves for the workplace or post-graduate studies.

AMCA Lab
The Ancient Mediterranean Cultures and Archaeology (AMCA) Lab – often called the Archaeology lab – houses hundreds of artifacts and reproductions from Mediterranean antiquity and over 1,000 books and texts in the Albert and Mary Ann Steiner library. The AMCA Lab offers numerous opportunities for independent research, internships, and employment.

Research Opportunities
Students have the opportunity to complete original research projects while being mentored by our faculty. Some students take their research further by producing a thesis, presenting at conferences, and/or publishing original work.
