Audit for Enrichment
The Audit for Enrichment (AFE) program is designed for adults who have achieved at least a high school education and who are interested in not-for-credit learning experiences for personal or professional enrichment. This program is available for undergraduate courses during the fall, spring, and summer terms, and is limited to the following populations:
- Butler alumni who have previously completed an undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate;
- Indianapolis-area community members who are 55 years or older; and
- Indianapolis-area community members granted audit privileges by an academic dean or member of the Cabinet.
All other populations are encouraged to contact Butler’s Office of Admission regarding a non-degree option.
Individuals must submit an electronic Audit for Enrichment Application no later than two (2) weeks before the start of the term. First-time applicants will be asked to provide proof of highest educational degree received (i.e. transcript or diploma). The college and/or departments of instruction will review your application, and you will be notified of your acceptance into the program by the Office of Registration and Records. Once you have been approved for AFE registrations, you do not need to submit the education documents again but must continue to request coursework at least two (2) weeks in advance of the term for review and specific course approval.
After your application has been approved, Registration and Records will register you on the first day of the term if there is still a seat available in the class. Effective Fall 2025, the AFE fee is 50% of the per-credit hour undergraduate non-degree rate, or $125 per credit hour for lifelong learners who are 55 years old or older. The AFE fee can be found on the Student Accounts webpage. The AFE fee plus any additional course-related fees are payable at the time of registration and are not refundable. Only the cancellation of the course by the University would constitute reason for a refund of the AFE fee.
Courses taken in this program will be designated as an “audit” on an official transcript and may not be changed to “credit” enrollment later in the term.
Individuals interested in auditing a course can consult our list of Frequently Asked Questions for further information. Additional questions or concerns may be directed to Lauren McCartt at lmccartt@butler.edu or registrar@butler.edu.
