Benefit Coverage Upon Termination of Employment

Beginning January 1, 2018, any employee who voluntarily or involuntary terminates employment with Butler University will lose all benefit coverage on their last day of work at the University. To help navigate this new policy, we’ve put together a list of common FAQs. If you still have questions after reviewing the FAQs, please reach out to HR at askhr@butler.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who is impacted by this change?

All benefits eligible faculty and staff are impacted by this change.

2. How does ending my benefits on my last day of active work affect me?

This will mean coverage for you and/or your spouse and family will end on your last active day of work.  You will be receiving COBRA coverage notification within 30 days of your last active day at work.
You will be charged a pro-rated premium for the actual number of days in the month that you were insured under Butler’s coverage(s).

3. When will I receive my last pay if I am retiring or separating from the university (voluntary and involuntary)?

You will receive your last pay on the next regularly scheduled pay date. Bi-weekly employees will be paid on the next regularly scheduled bi-weekly pay date. For employees paid monthly it will be the last working day of the month.

4. If I am a 9- or 10-month faculty member and have elected to receive my pay over 12 months will I still receive my full contract amount if my retirement or separation from the University occurs in May, at the conclusion of the academic year?

Yes, your pay will be pro-rated so that upon separation from the University in May, you will have received the full compensation amount per your contract for the corresponding academic year. Benefits will end on your last active day of work.

5. If I am retiring or separating from the University at the end of the academic year, and I’ve elected to receive my pay over 9 months and I am on a renewable contract, will I receive any adjustment for the premiums I have paid as I have been paying more per month?

Yes, your premiums will be pro-rated to reflect payment for the months you have worked and have been covered. You will receive an adjustment (typically a refund) in your last pay.

6. If I am a 9 month or 10 month faculty member and have elected to receive my pay over 12 months but am retiring or separating from the University at the conclusion of the fall academic semester (December), how does this impact me?

Your benefits will end on your last active day of work. You will be compensated for half of your annual contract for the academic year.
