Sustainable Transportation

In addition to promoting a walkable campus, we seek to minimize the use of vehicles through bike, bus, and ride-share programs.
Biking at Butler
Pacers Bikeshare
Butler University is proud to partner with Indianapolis Cultural Trail, Inc. to bring Indiana Pacers Bikeshare to our campus and the greater Butler-Tarkington and Midtown communities. Through this partnership, Butler students, faculty, and staff with an active Butler email address are eligible to ride free.
Personal Bike
Students can also register their personal bikes for free with the Butler University Police Department for added security. There are nearly 100 bike racks spread out around campus for convenience. Through the Central Canal Towpath, campus is linked to Indianapolis’ two most frequented bicycle and pedestrian trails: the Indianapolis Cultural Trail and the Monon Trail.
IndyGo
For public transportation, two IndyGo bus routes (18 and 28) were also modified to serve the Butler Campus directly with convenient stops along Sunset Avenue. IndyGo S-passes (1 month) are available in the Student Involvement and Leadership Office for $30.
Electric Vehicle Charging
Butler University has six Level 2 EV chargers available for public use. Two chargers are located in the northeast corner of the first floor of the Sunset Avenue Parking Garage, and four chargers are located on the southwest corner of the Hinkle Fieldhouse parking lot.
(Daily campus use by permitted faculty, staff, and students, with visitor parking available at hourly rates)
- A separate parking permit is not required for faculty, staff, and students to use EV charging stations. However, faculty, staff, and students must maintain a valid Butler University parking permit to park on campus.
- Visitors will be required to pay the hourly rate for the Sunset Avenue parking garage in addition to charging costs. Parking at the Hinkle Fieldhouse surface lot is free; visitors will only be required to pay for EV charging.
- EV charging is billed at $0.40 per kWh.
- Vehicles may occupy a charging space for a maximum of 4 hours.
- A 30-minute grace period is provided after the time limit expires.
- After the grace period, an idle fee of $10 per hour will be assessed.
- Non-electric vehicles parked in designated EV charging spaces are subject to parking citations.
(Arts, athletic, and other special events where visitors pay a flat event parking fee)
- Visitors are responsible for both the applicable event parking fee and EV charging costs.
- EV charging is billed at $0.40 per kWh.
- The 4-hour parking limit does not apply during event operations.
- Non-electric vehicles parked in designated EV charging spaces are subject to parking citations.
Student Uber
Butler’s partnership with Uber, an on-demand private driving app, offers a safe, alternative transportation option to and from campus. Student Government Association (SGA) provides full transportation coverage from campus to local hospitals, urgent care centers, and the Indianapolis Airport and discounted rates to IUPUI, Glendale Target, and Saraga International Grocery.
