Director

Maxie is the Director of Health Services and brings a rich and varied healthcare background to Butler University, combining expertise in practice management, clinical care, and organizational leadership. She began her career in the pharmaceutical industry with a focus on respiratory and mental health conditions before transitioning into nursing, where she gained extensive clinical experience at Riley Hospital for Children.
During her time at Riley, Maxie worked across multiple specialties, including adolescent mental health and physical medicine rehabilitation. She later advanced into leadership as Manager of Clinical Operations for the Pulmonology, Allergy, and Sleep Medicine clinics and contributed to key systemwide initiatives through her service on the IU Health Academic Health Center Professional Practice Council and the System Nursing Shared Leadership Council. In these roles, she collaborated with senior leaders to develop safe, effective practices that improved patient care and wellbeing.
A dedicated lifelong learner, Maxie holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marian University and a Master of Health Administration from Indiana University. She has also earned a Leadership Certificate from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and a Certification in Executive Nursing Practice from the American Organization of Nurse Leaders.
At Butler, Maxie’s commitment to student health is reflected in numerous initiatives she has led to enhance access, safety, and wellbeing. These include implementing healthcare vending machines, expanding rapid STI testing and treatment options, and creating a safety resource tool to support College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences students during their clinical rotations. Her nursing philosophy centers on compassionate, high-quality care that supports the physical, mental, and spiritual health of the whole person.
Outside of work, Maxie enjoys hiking and spending time with her family cheering on the Bulldogs—especially her son—at Butler football games.
Physicians

Laura Counsell, MD is the Medical Director at Butler University Health Services. She earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in recognition of her compassionate, patient-centered care. She completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Ascension St. Vincent, serving as Chief Resident in her final year and pursuing an area of concentration in Global Health. She also holds a B.A. in Zoology from Miami University of Ohio.
Before joining Butler University, Dr. Counsell worked in an outpatient family medicine clinic, caring for patients of all ages. She has a special interest in preventive care and in empowering students to build lifelong healthy habits. She is passionate about helping young adults learn to advocate for themselves in healthcare settings both on and beyond campus.
Dr. Counsell lives near Butler with her husband, three sons, and their dog. Outside of work, she enjoys reading and spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens.
Nurse Practitioners
Registered Nurses

Brittany Craycraft, RN, BSN, is the Assistant Director of Butler University Health Services, where she has provided four years of committed leadership and high-quality clinical care. An Indianapolis native and Purdue University graduate, she has built a broad nursing career grounded in skill, compassion, and service.
Brittany spent 16 years as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse at St. Vincent Women’s Hospital and Community North, developing strong clinical judgment, advanced technical skills, and a calm, family-centered approach. She also worked as a school nurse for Hamilton Southeastern Schools and served as a vaccination nurse during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At Butler, Brittany is particularly proud of developing and implementing a safer, more efficient Allergy Immunotherapy process on campus. She is known as the clinic’s go-to resource for venipunctures, monospot testing, and creative problem-solving.
Guided by her CliftonStrengths “Woo,” Brittany brings warmth, energy, and a sense of community to the clinic, helping create a welcoming environment for students and staff.
Outside of work, Brittany enjoys life in Indianapolis with her husband, two children, and their goldendoodle puppy. Much of her free time is spent cheering on her kids at basketball, volleyball, and baseball games.
