Frequently Asked Questions:

What STIs are tested for at GYT events?

Students can be tested for Syphilis, Gonorrhea, and Chlamydia as these are the most common STI’s for young adults in Marion County. Each of these STI’s can be cured with antibiotics. However, even individuals who are cured of an STI can be re-infected—that’s why it’s important to use safe sex supplies to protect yourself & others. Students may also choose to be tested for HIV. Although there is no cure for HIV, it can be treated with routine HIV care.

Who conducts the testing?

Tests are conducted by certified testers/counselors from The Damien Center or Bell Flower Clinic.

How will I be tested?

The methods for testing for STI’s vary. In the case of a blood draw or finger prick, most students find these minimally painful—sometimes described as a pinch. For Gonorrhea and Chlamydia tests, it is important to test the body parts involved in sexual activity—if you choose to be tested for these STI’s, you will privately swab different parts of your body that have engaged in sexual activity, such as: throat, vagina, rectum, or male-bodied individuals may be asked to provide a urine sample.

How often should I get tested?

Results are usually ready in 2 weeks. Students will need to call Marion County Public Health Department at 317-221-8314 for their results. HIV results cannot be given over the phone and will need to be received in person with ID at Bell Flower Clinic. If a rapid HIV test is done, results can be given immediately in a confidential manner.
