Group Fitness Classes

Group fitness classes are a great way to learn a variety of exercise styles. Through group fitness, you are exposed to a community of people with similar goals who are seeking a healthy lifestyle. We offer a variety of exciting, fun, and dynamic group fitness classes on a weekly basis that are free through an HRC membership. Below you will find information on the various classes offered each semester.

Group Fitness Class FAQs
Cycle By Color: ICG’s Coach by Color is a high-energy class that combines individual Functional Threshold Power (FTP) with five color-coded training zones to have real-time results. Whether you’re riding rolling hills or sprints, you’ll be able to see your work in real time.
Express Cycle: This high-energy 30-minute cycling class combines music, motivation, and instructor-led drills to deliver a quick, effective cardio workout. Perfect for all fitness levels, it includes sprints, climbs, and recovery intervals to boost endurance and burn calories fast.
Pilates: Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It focuses on strengthening the core muscles that support stability and posture, while enhancing body awareness and promoting conscious control of movement. The practice also aims to balance muscle strength and flexibility throughout the body, helping to prevent imbalances that can lead to injury. Pilates is known for its emphasis on precision, control, and mindful movement, making it a powerful tool for building a strong, aligned, and resilient body.
Yoga: This class offers a well-rounded practice rooted in classic postures and intentional movement. Class moves at a moderate, accessible pace, allowing time to focus on proper alignment, breath awareness, and mindful transitions between poses. You can expect a balanced sequence that gently builds strength and flexibility while improving balance and body awareness. The practice concludes with calming poses and relaxation, leaving you feeling grounded, refreshed, and more connected to both body and breath.
Cardio Kickboxing: Get ready to punch, kick, and sweat your way to a stronger, healthier you! This high-energy Cardio Kickboxing class combines martial arts-inspired movements with heart-pumping cardio intervals for a full-body workout that builds endurance, strength, coordination, and confidence.
HIIT: HIIT or (High Intensity Interval Training) will improve your strength, endurance, and boost overall fitness. Participants move through intervals of exercises designed to elevate the heart rate while targeting major muscle groups. Workouts can include functional movements like squats, lunges, presses, and rows using dumbbells or bodyweight. The class is structured to maximize efficiency by developing functional strength. It is open to all fitness levels so prepared to feel the burn.

Customized Group Fitness is a Recreation & Wellness service available for students, faculty, and staff who would like to reserve a group fitness instructor to teach a class for a special event or for their department, office, organization, etc. If you would like to arrange a Customized Group Fitness Class, please contact Dylan Reisen at dreisen@butler.edu.

The cost of classes is already included in the student activity fees, which all full-time students pay at the beginning of the school year. Group Fitness Classes are also free for anyone with a valid RecWell membership. If you are interested in planning a Customized Group Fitness class for a private event or group, a small fee will be requested. Yes, all classes are open to all faculty and staff members.
Most of the Group Fitness Classes are located in the Wellness Studio, on the lower level of the recreation center. Some classes are also held in The Zone, which will always be indicated on the Group Fitness schedule.
We recommend arriving 10 minutes prior to the start time of class. This allows for time to set up, check in, and prepare for the class. New participants may want to arrive early and introduce themselves to the instructor so the instructor can give them a preview of the class.
