Purchasing

Drone shot of Butler campus

Two of Butler’s purchasing policies are designed specifically to uphold the University’s commitment to sustainable procurement: the Butler Way Construction Specifications and Guidelines and the Butler University Green Cleaning Policy (Appendix B). Some notable standards within these two policies include:

  • All Styrofoam products have been restricted from purchase on Office 360 due to their negative impact on the environment. Polystyrene foam contains chemicals that can be harmful to your health and are not recyclable on campus. Paper products or compostable products are the preferred material when ordering on Office 360.
  • Energy Star purchasing for all new appliances.
  • Regional priority (within 500 miles) for construction, restoration, and maintenance goods and services.
  • Filtered water bottle-filling stations for all new water fountains.
  • All carpeting and furniture meets Cradle-to-Cradle certification standards, which means materials are safe for humans and the environment and made with equitable labor practices
  • Every cleaning product employed by custodial and maintenance staff meets one of the standards set by either the EPA or the independent nonprofit certification company, Green Seal, Inc.
