Established in 1886, the newspaper’s award-winning print edition reflects a modern-day Collegian while still maintaining the paper’s historical character. A nationally recognized student newspaper, The Butler Collegian was named the nation’s Best All-Around Non-Daily Newspaper (small) for 2012 by the Society of Professional Journalists and earned the highest national award given to student publications, The Pacemaker, in 2011. For two consecutive years (2011 and 2012), The Collegian was selected as the Best All-Around Non-Daily Newspaper in region 5 (Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois) by the Society of Professional Journalists and Division II Newspaper of the Year by the Indiana Collegiate Press Association
The Collegian was honored with its first national Investigative Reporters & Editors award in 2014. The 2013 award-winning story was the result of a three-month investigation that used South African court records, documents from Wikileaks and sources in South Africa. In the last three years alone, the paper earned more than 100 state, regional and national awards for its campus coverage, including more than 40 first place awards.
The newspaper’s online counterpart, The Butler Collegian Online, features interactive, specialized and constantly changing content, drawing in local, national and international readers. Its standout campus coverage has received numerous citations by College Media Matters, the leading student journalism industry blog.
The Collegian is produced by the student journalists of Butler University. Its staff is made up of reporters and editors with various majors, including journalism. Each semester, The Collegian staff recruits new members—all Butler students are encouraged to apply regardless of class year.
Collegian staffers have completed or are completing internships at the Cincinnati Enquirer, Daily Oklahoman, NCAA, National Geographic magazine, The Hill newspaper (Washington, D.C.), Weekly Standard (Washington, D.C.), Wisconsin State Journal, Louisville Magazine, Indianapolis Monthly, Indianapolis Business Journal, Evansville Courier & Press, The Jasper Herald, The Elkhart Truth, The Jeffersonville News and Report and several other local and national outlets. In addition, they have completed investigative reporting workshops and their work has been published in national news outlets, including The New York Times.
