Strategic Communication

A fresh approach to public relations and advertising.

Students complete our program with the balance of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to create and deliver messages targeted to a wide array of audiences.

Communication with a purpose:

Move people. Build trust. Solve problems.

At Butler, Strategic Communication (STR) is about more than just making ads or writing press releases. It’s about making sure an organization’s message matches its values so people actually trust them. Whether you’re working for a global brand, a local nonprofit, or a startup, you’ll learn how to cut through the noise with honesty and strategy. You’ll graduate with the theoretical depth to understand audiences and the skills to boldly lead big messaging campaigns that get results.

The Strategic Communication Advantage

We combine the close-knit feel of a small campus with the massive opportunities of Indianapolis, a city that serves as your personal learning lab.

  • Integrated Strategy: We don’t separate PR from Advertising. You’ll learn to use every tool—from social media and content strategy to traditional media—to tell one consistent, powerful story.
  • Ethics First: Influence is a superpower. We teach you how to use it responsibly so that your work isn’t just persuasive, it’s also honest and helpful to the community.
  • Mentor-Led Learning: You aren’t just a number here. Our faculty are industry pros who help you find your path, connect you with local leaders, and mentor you every step of the way.
  • Location, Location, Location: Indianapolis is your 4-year competitive advantage, serving as an urban lab where you’ll solve real-world problems for local industry leaders, build a professional network, and gain elite experience without ever leaving the city.
  • Tentpole Experiential Learning: Refine your skills with live reps (and real-world-clients) as leaders with five fountains strategic communication agency and/or the Butler Institute for Sports and Entertainment (BISE).

The Indy Advantage: Our Learning Lab

At many schools, you have to wait for summer break to get professional experience. As a student in Strategic Communication at Butler, you’re already in the middle of it. Our campus is just minutes from downtown Indianapolis—a top-tier hub for marketing, sports, and tech—meaning your classroom extends far beyond the Fairbanks Center.

  • Projects with a Pulse: We don’t do “busy work.” Whether it’s analyzing fan engagement for the Indianapolis Colts or building a social campaign for a local nonprofit, your class projects solve actual problems for real organizations right here in the city.
  • Industry Insiders in the Classroom: You won’t just read about strategy; you’ll hear from the people leading it. Our faculty regularly bring in guest speakers from the NCAA, Eli Lilly, local powerhouse agencies, and tech startups to critique student work and share real-world playbooks.
  • Networking on Your Lunch Break: Because we are so close to the action, networking isn’t a special event—it’s a Tuesday. You’ll have the chance to visit agencies, shadow pros in their offices, and build a contact list before you even reach your senior year.
  • 200+ Professional Partnerships: When it is time for that formal internship, you have 200+ sites within reach of campus. You can work a morning shift at a downtown PR firm and still make it back to campus for your afternoon seminar.

National Reach: Treks

Strategic Communication students are provide numerous local opportunities, but also take advantage of national Treks and internships across the country. Washington, D.C. has been a popular location for student intensive trips, and in November 2025, Denver was added to our always evolving experiential learning. Watch our recap video!

Study Abroad

We live in a global society. That’s one reason we encourage students to take full advantage of opportunities to study abroad while pursuing their strategic communication degree. More than half of majors do just that and still graduate in four years. In addition to University-based programs, faculty have led short-term study abroad trips to explore strategic communication through a global lens, including to locales such as Shanghai, China and Japan, where students both learn and work while visiting six cities. Several Strategic Communication alumni have found their global experiences so transformational that they have chosen to pursue international careers in places such as Italy, England, and Ireland.
