Sociology & Criminology Outcomes

Much of what we are learning at the training academy relates directly to criminology and sociology topics emphasized during my time at Butler, where I learned in the classroom and through service-learning the importance of understanding society and the issues that people deal with from a sociological perspective.

—R.O. Cooper Dinges ’16, Recruit Officer, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, currently at the training academy to become a police officer.

My degree has helped me have a better understanding of our nation and aids me in my role with UN Women.  It has allowed me to understand the underlying issues and struggles women and girls face within our society and others.

—Meghan Luke Breitenbach ’10, public affairs specialist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Department of Homeland Security. Also public affairs director for the United Nations Women’s Chapter for Chicago, Illinois.

What I like most about Sociology is that it doesn’t focus on just one thing—it looks at all factors that affect a person’s life (race, class, gender, etc.). This is useful in my career because it helps me understand how many of these children end up in foster care, and how I can help them break the cycle.
