Butler Student Sociology & Criminology Association Constitution
Article I. Name
The name of the organization is the Student Sociology and Criminology Association (SSCA). The SSCA also serves as the Butler University Chapter of the John Weidner Foundation for Altruism.
Article II. Objective
The objective of the SSCA is to further the understanding of sociology, criminology, social work and altruism among members and in the larger community.
Article III. Membership
Membership is open to students interested in Sociology, Criminology, Social Work, Social Policy and related fields. Members are required to pay yearly dues in order to be active members. Membership consideration will be in compliance with the nondiscrimination policy of Butler University.
Article IV. Voting
Section A. A quorum will be a majority of all active members present, after informing the members as to when meetings will be held, and what issues will be discussed and voted upon. Proxy votes are not allowed.
Section B. Voting privileges will be revoked when:
- The member has accumulated 3 excused and 1 unexcused absences or 2 unexcused absences
- The member has failed to or has not made arrangements to pay dues
Section C. Voting privileges can be regained when:
- The member has come to 3 consecutive meetings
- The member has paid his dues
Article V. Officers
Section A. The SSCA shall have a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer and Faculty Advisor. These officers constitute the Executive Committee. The Secretary and Treasurer offices may be held by one person.
Section B. All officers must be active members of the SSCA.
Section C. The term of office shall be from April to April.
Section D. Elections shall be held yearly. At least two weeks notice shall be given prior to the date of election. Nominations shall be received from the floor and election will be by a simple majority of active members.
Section E. An officer may be removed from membership for a legitimate reason by a two thirds vote of the Executive Committee. A removed officer may appeal to the general active membership and may be reinstated by two thirds vote of the general active membership.
Section F. Any officer vacancy shall be filled by appointment by a majority of the remaining Executive Committee members, with ratification by the general active membership at the next meeting.
Article VI. Duties of Officers
Section A. President. The President shall be the chief executive officer and will conduct meetings, coordinate the functions of the other officers and assure planning is complete for SSCA activities.
Section B. Vice-President. The Vice President shall assume the duties of the President in the President’s absence; shall be the Parliamentarian and shall assure that SSCA operates within the limits of its Constitution.
Section C. Secretary. The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping the minutes of regular and executive committee meetings. The Secretary will post a copy of the minutes on the SSCA bulletin board and provide a copy for the SSCA file. The Secretary shall keep attendance at all meetings.
Section D. Treasurer. The Treasurer shall keep a current record of all financial transactions of the SSCA; shall make a report at each meeting; shall make a quarterly report containing a list of all receipts and disbursements; shall prepare a budget; and shall furnish a copy of reports to the SSA file.
Section E. Advisor. The Advisor shall assist the SSA in all areas of operations; shall be aware of the SSCA’s procedures and regulations and assist SSA in adhering to them; shall be a non-voting member of the Executive Committee; shall attend all meetings.
Section F. Public Relations Officer. The Public Relations Officer shall endeavor to see that the accomplishments of the SSCA receive public notice in such outlets as the Butler Collegian, Indianapolis Star, local radio and local television.
Article VII. Notice of Meeting
Section A. The time and location of the regularly scheduled meetings shall be determined by the Executive Committee and shall be at least twice monthly.
Section B. At least 7 days notice shall be given for each regular meeting.
Section C. Special meetings or emergency meetings may be called at any time by the Executive Committee but attendance will not be mandatory.
Section D. Each meeting shall include an order of business, reading of the minutes and enumeration of attendance.
Article VIII. Parliamentary Procedure
Section A. Robert’s Rules of Order, revised, shall be followed by SSA.
Section B. Parliamentary rules may be suspended by two-thirds of the active members present.
Article IX. Revision of the Constitution
The Constitution of SSCA shall be examined for revision once every two years at the order of the President.
