Susan J. Zurbuchen—Associate Professor and Chair

Susan Zurbuchen serves as the director of arts administration for the Jordan College of the Arts. She holds a bachelor's degree from Lakeland College in Sheboygan , Wisc. and a master's degree from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. Ms. Zurbuchen teaches courses in arts management, fundraising and audience development. She supervises students in internships in the fields of music, theatre and dance. Susan Zurbuchen has worked as an arts administrator and nonprofit board consultant for over twenty-five years. Her professional associations include membership in the TCG, the Indiana Advocates for the Arts and the Association of Arts Administration Educators. She is also a member of Phi Kappa Lambda, an honorary music fraternity. Ms. Zurbuchen served as a grant review panelist for the Indiana Arts Commission, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, the Central Indiana Community Foundation and Young Audiences of Indiana.

Brenda Lee Johnston—Assistant Professor

Brenda Lee Johnston received her Bachelor of Arts in Arts Management with an emphasis in Dance and a minor in Theatre Arts—Drama from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  She has worked for Milwaukee Repertory Theater, First Stage Children’s Theater, and Skylight Opera (now Music) Theatre. In August 2004 she took on the role of Founding Director of the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center (SMPAC). After six years at SMPAC, she pursued a dual Master’s degree in Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon University and Innovation and Organization of Culture and the Arts from Universita di Bologna in Italy. Her graduate thesis research was conducted at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History under the guidance of Nina Simon. Her thesis is entitled, “The Roles of Museums in Communities: Social Inclusion & Community Engagement.” She joined the Arts Administration faculty at Butler University in 2015 after serving as the Executive Director of the Schauer Arts Center and teaching as an adjunct lecturer at UW-Stevens Point. Brenda serves as Co-Chair of the Creative Engagement Committee for Any Given Child Indy, working to increase equity and access to the arts for all K-8 students in Indianapolis Public School. She has performed with Skylight Opera Theatre, Wild Space Dance Company, Katie Sopoci, Michelle DiMeo, Cantare Chorale, and others.
