First-Generation Students
These pilot sections offer the same academic experience, expectations, and course content as all other First-Year Seminars. The difference is in the shared classroom experience: bringing together students who may be navigating similar questions about college life, and creating space for connection with peers and a faculty member in that context. At the same time, it’s important to know that you won’t be behind or miss out if you’re not in one of these sections. Butler offers strong support for first-generation students throughout campus, and every FYS is designed to help you build relationships, explore ideas, and start your college journey well.

Course Description
Apparate into the magical world of Harry Potter in this FYS course. This fantasy fiction series intertwines entertainment with diverse social issues, offering readers a unique lens to examine real-world themes through the eyes of wizards and Muggles alike. Utilizing J.K. Rowling’s novels, film adaptations, and the dynamic world of fan fiction, we will delve into contemporary challenges such as belonging, prejudice, power, identity, resistance, and friendship within our communities.

Course Description
I chose this topic because it is important to be cognizant of our individual process and habits. It is imperative that one knows how to articulate their voice and be comfortable doing so. I also think it is important that we seek to hear the voices of others. Listening to and thinking about others can be both educational and transformative on multiple levels.
