COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement FAQs

Butler University will require COVID-19 vaccinations for all students, faculty, and staff beginning with the fall 2021 academic semester—allowing us to more safely offer the robust on-campus experience that we all desire. We envision returning to a pre-pandemic environment, including open facilities, full classrooms, relaxed policies regarding face coverings and social distancing, normal social activities, and a regular academic calendar with Winter and Spring Breaks.

COVID-19 Vaccinations

To the extent possible, all students, faculty, and staff are expected to have their final dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by August 1, 2022. You can find a vaccination clinic near you and schedule an appointment through the CDC website.

Some restrictions from the 2020-2021 academic year have been lifted for fully vaccinated individuals. Among the changes, vaccinated individuals are:

  • Not required to social distance
  • Not required to quarantine, as long as they remain asymptomatic
  • Not required to participate in entry and surveillance COVID-19 testing
  • Eligible to participate in Study Abroad programs

Requests for Exemption

Students, faculty, and staff can request individual exemptions from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement. Requests will be considered for health-related reasons or strongly held religious or personal convictions.

Individuals who are granted exemptions will be expected to adhere to certain policies and protocols. Among the protocols, unvaccinated individuals: 

  • Will be required to quarantine for 10 days if they come into contact with an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19
  • Will be unable to participate in study abroad programs

To request an exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement, please complete the COVID-19 Vaccination Exemption Request Form. Students should complete and send the form from their Butler email account to healthservices@butler.edu with the subject “COVID-19 Exemption Request.” Faculty and staff should complete and send the form from their Butler email account to benefits@butler.edu with the subject “COVID-19 Exemption Request.”

Note that exempted, unvaccinated individuals are still required to follow the protocols above.

Learning Modes

We will return to full-capacity, face-to-face learning this year. Until further notice, both vaccinated and unvaccinated students and faculty are required to wear face coverings in the classroom. Requests to teach or take classes online based on unvaccinated status will not be granted.
