PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Programs
The Comunity Health Network pharmacotherapy residency started in 2009 and is designed to provide both clinical teaching and practical experience in the inpatient, outpatient and university settings. Each year, Community Health Network recruits one pharmacotherapy specialty resident with primary responsibilities at Butler University, Community Hospital East and the Community Group Family Medicine Center.
The resident’s training experience will include required rotations with the inpatient family medicine team, outpatient family medicine center and an administrative academic experience at Butler University. Elective rotation opportunities can be tailored for the resident’s interests and career goals. Elective experiences may include, but are not limited to, the areas of academia, infectious disease, cardiology, critical care, behavioral care, oncology and administration. Residency activities will include inpatient rounding, disease state management in the pharmacotherapy clinic, medication counseling, healthcare provider education, and mentorship of pharmacy students and PGY1 residents. The resident will serve as primary preceptor to student pharmacists from Butler University and participate in classroom instruction (both didactic and case-based interactive discussion) of Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences students.

Hi everyone! My name is Brian Wenger and I am the PGY2 Pharmacotherapy Resident with Community Health Network/COPHS. I attended Butler for my PharmD with a medical Spanish concentration, and I completed my PGY1 residency at Community as well. I am originally from the Chicagoland area and currently live near downtown Indy (with my new cat, Milo!) As far as my professional interests, I am passionate about health equity/diversity initiatives, underserved patient care, and academia. My practice interests are in family medicine on both the inpatient and outpatient sides. I also enjoy precepting and mentoring pharmacy students. In my free time I enjoy running, watching movies/TV shows (I am a big Marvel and Star Wars fan!), and traveling with friends & family. I’m excited to get started with my teaching at COPHS this year, and look forward to seeing some of you around campus.

- Something Interesting About You: Before anyone asks, I am 6’6” tall, but never was too much of a basketball player. I did play ultimate frisbee throughout high school and was a part of three straight state championships.
- Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with my fiancé, friends, and family. My fiancé and I enjoy running and completing 5Ks. I also enjoy playing video games on Xbox and board games with friends.

The Eskenazi Health Ambulatory Care PGY2 Program was established in 2019 and is an ASHP Accredited Program. This program prepares residents to successfully manage complicated medication regimens in a diverse patient population in the ambulatory care setting. The resident will work alongside a multidisciplinary team within a variety of ambulatory care sites at a safety-net academic medical center focused on the care of underserved patients.
The purpose of the Eskenazi Health PGY2 Ambulatory Care residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in Ambulatory Care. The PGY2 residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as a practitioner by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
Residents also have the potential to be involved with interdisciplinary groups and decision-making through the committee co-chair experience, longitudinal research project and various other performance improvement projects that are assigned throughout the residency year. During the longitudinal staffing rotation, the resident will work in the outpatient pharmacy and interact with front-line members of the above disciplines in answering drug information questions and helping to troubleshoot drug therapy problems as they arise.
PGY2 Ambulatory Care residents will participate in teaching activities within Eskenazi Health and Butler University. These experiences include longitudinal course involvement, hospital in-services, topic discussions, patient education classes, didactic lectures, and experiential precepting.

Chandler Howell was the PGY2 Ambulatory Care and Academia Pharmacy Resident at Eskenazi Health and Butler University. He is from Centerville, Indiana and graduated from Butler University in 2019. Shelby Albertson, PharmD, Ambulatory Care Residency Eskenazi
Shelby Albertson is the inaugural PGY2 Ambulatory Care and Academia Pharmacy Resident at Eskenazi Health and Butler University. She graduated from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in 2018 and completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Eskenazi Health. Her practice interests include academia, motivational interviewing, primary care, endocrinology, and pharmacogenomics. This year, aside from teaching, she is looking forward to starting a new cardiovascular risk reduction service at a clinic site that serves adults experiencing homelessness. In her free time, Shelby enjoys attending group fitness classes, traveling, trying new restaurants, and hiking with her husband, Ryan, and her Bernese mountain dog, Gryffin.
The Butler University/Veteran Health Indiana Ambulatory Care PGY2 Program provides the resident with a diverse clinic experience and ample teaching opportunities. The resident gains experience in managing patients in primary care and specialty clinics. The goals of this program are to train the resident to be a confident and competent ambulatory care practitioner and educator upon conclusion of the program. The resident will have teaching opportunities in both large and small classroom settings and also precept final-year student pharmacists during their APPE rotation at the VA. Teaching opportunities with medical residents, medical students, and other healthcare learners also exist at the VA. Ample research opportunities in patient care and education also will be provided to the resident. The resident will also develop a business plan for either a new or expanded pharmacist position.

Amy Thurston is originally from Glen Allen, Virginia and received her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2020 from the University of North Carolina. I completed my education at Western New England University in Springfield, MA and my PGY1 at John Dempsey Hospital at University of Connecticut Health Center. I’m originally from New Jersey and have enjoyed being able to see different parts of the country through my schooling and post-graduate training! Shannon Castek was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from Purdue University College of Pharmacy in 2018. She recently completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at IU Health Bloomington Hospital and her PGY2 Residency in Ambulatory Care/Education at the Roudebush VA Medical Center. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking, and listening to true crime podcasts. She is thrilled for the opportunity to connect and work with the students and faculty at Butler!
The Community Health Network psychiatric pharmacy residency is an ASHP accredited residency which in 2010 The program is designed to provide a well-rounded and diverse experience in which the resident is exposed to a variety of settings and training modalities so that upon completion of this residency the candidate can function with the knowledge, confidence, and competence a leader is expected to show in this specialty area. Residents in this program are called upon to resolve real-life challenges and issues in a supportive and nurturing environment while working with an integrated healthcare team consisting of psychiatrists, social workers, case managers, nursing and pharmacy, as well as psychiatry residents and medical students.
The behavioral care pavilion at Community Hospital North is the largest inpatient acute care psychiatric hospital in the state and consists of nine units and is approximately 120 beds, allowing the resident to gain experience in multiple and diverse areas of behavioral care. Clinical rotation opportunities may include (and are not limited to): general adult inpatient psychiatry rounding with the psychiatry residency service team, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, integrated recovery/addiction medicine, consult/liaison psychiatry team, and outpatient psychiatry. Working closely with academic affairs and the physician psychiatry residency program, activities such as grand rounds, journal clubs as well as involvement with the scholarly activity and research committee are routinely scheduled for the resident to develop these skills, their education, and contribute to original research, case reports, and/or patient safety/quality improvement with the goal of improved care and optimal patient outcomes. Medication education groups for patients also help the PGY2 refine patient counseling and education skills.
The Community Health Network psychiatric pharmacy PGY2 residency includes opportunities at Butler such as (and not limited to) the following, leading case conference for the therapeutics course, delivering one or more large group lectures in the Therapeutics of Psychiatry elective in the spring semester, precepting and evaluating rotation students, participation in the academic leadership and academic administration rotationa, leading a monthly physician assistant student psychopharmacology review, voluntary involvement with the BU student CPNP chapter, as well as exposure to many other opportunities on campus.

Hayley Krushinski is originally from Federalsburg, MD and received her PharmD from Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2020. She recently completed her PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at Community Health Network and recently completed her PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency at Community Health Network/Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Hayley accepted a position working with her ideal patient population at the Hawaii VA. In between studying sessions for the BCPP exam, she enjoys going to the beach, reading, and being on the boat with family and friends. Her professional areas of interest include mood disorders, severe mental illness, and working with the veteran population.

She received her PharmD from Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy in 2019 and completed her PGY1 general pharmacy residency at Community Health Network in 2021. Beth is originally from Batesburg, SC and loves traveling to new places, reading, and listening to crime podcasts. Her professional areas of interest include mood disorders and pediatric psychiatry. Upon residency completion she accepted a position with one of our Community Health Network Hospitals in order to establish routine psychiatric pharmacy services for patients.

Shannon is from Olathe, KS and earned her PharmD degree from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in Lawrence, KS. She completed a PGY1 residency at the New Mexico VA Health Care System in Albuquerque, NM. before successfully completing her PGY2 psychiatric pharmacy residency with us in 2020. With interests in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and academia, Shannon accepted a faculty position at Husson University in Maine. Shannon enjoys classic films, hiking, high-quality sushi and traveling as she has visited at least 12 countries.
The philosophy of the PGY-2 Internal Medicine Residency at Ascension-St. Vincent Indianapolis and Butler University COPHS is to provide the resident with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to internal medicine patients. This opportunity will be provided through active participation in evidence-based disease state management, patient/family and medical staff education, medication safety, outcomes-based research, and educational and scholarly activities. . As a Butler University affiliated PGY2 program, didactic, small group and experiential teaching will be a part of the required experiences in addition to the multidisciplinary educational activities at Ascension- St. Vincent. The core rotations include four months of Internal Medicine, Medical ICU, Infectious diseases, longitudinal Ambulatory Care and Administrative Academia. Upon completion of the PGY-2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Residency Program, the resident will be prepared to attain board certification and secure a hospital based internal medicine position and/or an academic position with a College of Pharmacy.
Ascension-St Vincent Indianapolis is a 500+ bed community teaching hospital that serves as a tertiary referral center for a large network of Ascension hospitals in Indiana. The hospital has an active Medical Education Department supporting medical residents and fellows in Cardiology, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Podiatry, and Transitional/Preliminary Medicine. The pharmacy department provides postgraduate training programs for pharmacists and maintains affiliations with Butler, Manchester, and Purdue Universities. The internal medicine service is composed of hospitalist-based and traditional teaching teams, and the PGY2 Internal Medicine resident will work directly with the Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Transitional and Preliminary medical residents. Ascension-St. Vincent Indianapolis is home to many subspecialties including cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, and neurology and the internal medicine service serves as the primary admitting team for many of these patients.

Ashly Schuyler, PharmD, BCPS, Internal Medicine Residency
Ashly Schuyler received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry at Indianapolis University Purdue University of Indianapolis in 2010. She then completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at Lipscomb University College of Pharmacy in Nashville, Tennessee followed by a PGY1 residency at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, Tennessee. She worked as a clinical pharmacist at that practice site for a year and then made her way back home to Indiana.
For the last six years, she served as a clinical staff pharmacist at the Indiana University Health Adult Academic Health Center (AAHC), at both the Methodist and University Hospitals in Indianapolis. She is board certified in Pharmacotherapy and is currently a PGY2 Internal Medicine Pharmacy Resident at Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis. Upon completion, she hopes to pursue a clinical specialist position at an academic medical center and obtain a clinical faculty position at a college of pharmacy. Her research and clinical practice interests include cardiology, anticoagulation, hepatology and academia. In her free time, she enjoys playing video games, reading, and spending time with her husband and three sons.

Kayla Effinger is originally from Westfield, Indiana, she graduated with her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Bowling Green State University in 2016 and her Doctorate of Pharmacy from The Ohio State University in 2020. Kayla completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Franciscan Health Indianapolis. Her areas of interest include heart failure, anticoagulation, diabetes, and primary care. In her spare time, Kayla enjoys traveling, exploring new restaurants, and spending time outdoors. After the completion of the program, Kayla obtained a position as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
