Tips to Keep Teaching during Campus Disruptions

This page was designed to support the University’s online delivery of the curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic, weather-related delays or closures, and other significant campus disruptions.

General Resources for Pivoting to Online Teaching

The Butler community has shown great resilience and flexibility in response to the sudden shift to online emergency remote teaching that occurred during Spring 2020 and the move to more online courses and socially distanced in-person classrooms this academic year.

Even after we are able to return to in-person courses at full classroom occupancies, there may still be a need to quickly switch between teaching modalities in response to campus closures or disruptions.

The following resources have been created and compiled to help you develop a framework to pivot between modalities as the need arises.

Request Additional Tools in Canvas

Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) is a standard set of specifications for allowing third party learning applications to integrate with educational platforms. Third-party LTI integration allows the application to connect to Canvas. Before submitting your request, view the list of LTIs that have either been approved or requested.

All new tool requests for Canvas LTIs must go through the LTI approval process. The approval process for each tool will include reviews for Functionality, Accessibility, Security, FERPA, Legal, Cost, as well as other factors.

Equipment Considerations

In order to reliably deliver instruction off-campus, it will be prudent to use suitable technology equipment. Consider the following recommendations:

  • Reliable Internet & Capable Computer: See IT’s Telecommuting page for recommendations.
  • Audio and/or Video Capacity: For audio and/or video recording, it is strongly recommended that you use a high-quality USB mic/headset combo (such as the Logitech H390) as well as a webcam (most laptops already come installed with webcams). For an affordable USB doc cam, consider the IPEVO V4K.

Irwin Libray has some of these devices, so consider checking out equipment before purchasing. (Note that depending on the campus disruption, checkout times may be delayed or cancelled.)

NOTE: Contact IT at ask.butler.edu if you feel your equipment or internet connectivity is not sufficient to teach remotely.

Academic Partnerships (AP) Staffing and Support

In the event of an extended campus disruption, Academic Partnerships staff will likely work remotely but continue to provide ongoing support via telephone, email, and web conferencing with Zoom.

Instructional Technology Support

For instructional technology support, faculty should email or call as usual.
