Writers’ Studio
About the Writers’ Studio
Welcome to the Writers’ Studio at Butler University—a campus-wide hub for collaborative inquiry, creative discovery, and transdisciplinary communication.
Historically, a “studio” was an artist’s workspace where the messy creative process was valued over a perfected final product. In modern wellness culture, a studio is a dedicated sanctuary for practice alongside experienced guides. The Butler University Writers’ Studio combines the best of both worlds: We are less a place where students “get help” and more a dedicated space where writers engage in the ongoing work of thinking, reading, and writing alongside a supportive community of practitioners.
What we do
The Writers’ Studio is:
- A space designed for the act of writing, not just the review of writing.
- An opportunity to collaborate with peer writing consultants who act as facilitators and “resident artists” rather than graders or evaluators.
- An invitation to collaborate with other writers, offering low-stakes feedback in a shared creative, problem-solving atmosphere.
Work does not need to be “finished” to be brought into the Studio, nor does it need to be “perfect.” We encourage students to embrace failure and revision as essential parts of the discovery process, prioritizing experimentation and strategy over mere editing or “correcting” prose.
Pillars of support
Individualized writing consultations
Our one-on-one consultations offer sustained, deep engagement with your writing process. Trained peer consultants serve as “informed readers” using active listening and non-directive questioning to help you clarify arguments, organize thoughts, and gain confidence in your own rhetorical choices.
- Bring Any Project: We welcome lab reports, business proposals, analytical essays, grant applications, artist statements, screenplays, and personal passion projects.
- Any Stage of the Process: Come with an outline, an assignment prompt, or messy early drafts. Consultants sit alongside writers engaged in works-in-progress.
Consultant-led interactive workshops
Serving as a celebrated “third space” on campus, the Studio hosts regular interactive, 60-minute consultant-led workshops designed to build a social culture of reading and writing. Specialized series for Fall 2026 include:
- Fight, Flight, or Write, a biweekly Writing for Wellness Workshop Series
- The Creative Circle, a biweekly Creative Writing Workshop Series
- The Art of Articulation, a Critical Reading & Effective Writing Workshop Series
Coming Fall 2027: consultant-embedded seminars
Next academic year, we will collaborate directly with University faculty to embed writing consultants into select courses, such as First-Year Seminars. Embedded consultants will partner with instructors to scaffold assignments, lead in-class peer review or invention sessions, and hold dedicated office hours for students throughout the semester.
