Intent to Vacate

Students who will be leaving their on-campus housing space for any reason, prior to the standard move-out at the end of the year in May, need to complete an online intent to vacate form as soon as they decide they are leaving. This form is not needed for the routine, end of the academic year move-out process in May. 

Important note for those leaving at the end of fall or spring semester

Students who are moving out at the end of the fall semester in December, and will not be returning to on-campus housing for the spring semester, must submit this form by 5:00 PM on December 1.

For students leaving/withdrawing Butler at the end of the spring semester and not returning the following fall semester, this does not include study abroad or away students, the form must be submitted by 5PM on June 1.

Limited approved reasons to vacate prior to the end of the year

Please note there are only a few approved reasons that a student may vacate on-campus housing prior to the end of the academic year in May (the end of the housing contract term). Generally, these reasons are:

  • Transferring to another institution
  • Withdrawing from all classes at Butler University, but not transferring
  • Studying abroad or outside of the Indianapolis area as a Butler student
  • Internship outside of the Indianapolis area
  • Student Teaching outside of the Indianapolis area
  • Rotation placement outside of the Indianapolis area
  • Graduating mid-year

Students who intend to leave on-campus housing before the end of the academic year in May, but are leaving for a reason not listed above, must receive approval in advance. In these cases, contact Residence Life as soon as possible by email or call 317-940-9458.
