Returning Student Housing
All current Butler University students must fill out the housing application regardless of whether they plan to live on campus, live in their Greek chapter house, commute, or be away for a semester (study abroad, internship, etc.) during early spring semester. Please see the details below that you received to your Butler email which include information about the housing application and selection process for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Housing Application Process
The housing application will open on Friday, March 12th, 2021 at 10:00 AM. At that time, any current Butler University student will be able to apply for housing for 2021 – 2022.
Current students will need to complete the housing application by March 22nd, 2021 at 5:00 PM to participate in the room selection process. Students who complete the application after March 22nd, 2021 will be placed in rooms by Residence Life Staff.
If you intend to commute or live in your Greek chapter facility, you will still need to complete this process to seek approval outside of the Butler University Residency Policy (listed below). You will need to follow the instructions in the Housing Application Process section below, select your specific process in the housing application link, and complete that by March 22nd, 2021 at 5:00 PM.
Housing Selection Process
If your application is complete by March 22nd, 2021, you will receive another email from Residence Life Staff on March 29th, 2021 detailing the time slot you are designated to select your housing assignment with any students in your housing selection group.
Timeslots for housing selection will begin on Monday, April 5th, 2021. Students can add people to the housing selection group when applying and all groups must be finalized by March 22nd, 2021 at 5:00 PM .
If your application is complete after March 22nd, 2021, you will be assigned a housing assignment by Residence Life Staff. You will receive your assignment after all students who are eligible to participate in housing selection have selected their housing assignments.
It is the policy of Butler University to offer full, equal and nondiscriminatory assistance to all students without regard to their race, color, religion, nationality, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation in placement in university residential facilities. All full-time undergraduate students are required to live in University owned or operating housing for six academic year semesters except those who are: a) commuting from and residing full-time in the primary residence of their parents or legal guardians which is within 30 miles of campus; or b) married or civilly unified and residing with spouse; or c) are a legal guardian of a child and residing with said child; or e) are a military veteran with 2- years of active service before enrollment. Study abroad/away is considered a semester living on- campus. Transfer students must live in Butler owned/operated housing unless they meet one of the criteria above.
All campus housing includes both room and required dining plans with the exception of the apartment communities (South Campus Apartments, Butler Terrace, University Terrace and Apartment Village). Apartment community residents may purchase community-dining plans through the link on the Butler Dining page. All room and board contracts are academic year agreements.
Greek Chapter houses, on Butler University’s campus, are independently owned and operated by local or national housing corporations. Each Chapter has a room and dining contract that is consistent with their national/international office. Greek chapter housing is considered on- campus housing for continuing sophomore and junior students. Some chapters may require seniors to live in their chapter house. If a Chapter house does not have space for all affiliated sophomore and juniors students, they must live in Butler owned/operated on-campus housing. Chapters do not release students to off-campus status.
The University reserves the right to enforce any restrictions or regulations necessary for the general safety, welfare of residents and/or the maintenance of its property. Under certain conditions, students may apply for a special exemptions to the Residency Policy. If provided an exception, or living off- campus as a senior student, all are expected to adhere to all federal, state, and local laws as well as the Student Code of Conduct of Butler University. Students living off- campus or commuting from home are Butler University students and must adhere to the Student Code of Conduct.
If you are going to be on campus for the summertime, we will be offering some housing in Apartment Village that is billed on a weekly basis. More information about applications for summer housing will be updated on this page in early spring.
All summer housing contracts will end on the last day of summer classes (August 14, 2020), but students will move to their permanent placements by July 24, 2020.
- Rising sophomores—Likely to live in Fairview House or Residential College. New this year, residents can select rooms in Fairview without needing to fill an entire suite unit.
- Rising juniors—Open houses for our four apartment communities will take place later in February.
- Students affiliated with Greek chapter houses will learn from their Chapter if they will need to live in the chapter house or have the opportunity to be included in housing selection.
- New living/dining furniture available in the fall for all of our apartment units (except Butler Terrace that will remain a “design-your-own-space option” for those students who desire that type of apartment living.) Junior and Senior students who live in the other apartment communities will not need to bring any furniture next year, making it much easier on our students and families.
- Research continues to show that students who live on campus are more engaged and academically successful.
- Commuter Students, your home must be within 30 miles of campus. An application must be filled out, notarized, and certified to confirm this status.
