Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education (Mathematics Licensure)
Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College may transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Middle/Secondary Education – Mathematics program. This pathway prepares you for licensure to teach mathematics in grades 5–12.

What This Agreement Covers
This transfer pathway supports Ivy Tech students interested in teaching mathematics in middle or high school. Ivy Tech coursework in mathematics, general education, and education foundations applies directly toward Butler’s licensure program.
At Butler, you will complete:
- Upper-level mathematics coursework
- Secondary education methodology and classroom practice
- Field experiences in local schools
- A full semester of student teaching
Students typically complete the remainder of the bachelor’s degree in two years of full-time study.
What’s Fulfilled Through Your Ivy Tech Degree
Your Ivy Tech coursework typically fulfills several Butler Core requirements (including FYS, AR, NW, PCA, and GHS).
What Courses Will I Take at Butler?
You’ll complete the remaining Mathematics licensure coursework at Butler, plus any remaining Butler requirements identified during transfer evaluation. (Your plan is structured to meet licensure requirements and upper-division expectations.)
Licensure Requirements
To become licensed to teach Mathematics (grades 5–12), students must complete:
- Indiana-approved Mathematics content exam
- Pedagogy licensure exam(s)
- CASA or an approved basic skills alternative
- Criminal history background check
- CPR/AED certification
- State-required suicide prevention training
- All field experience requirements
- Successful completion of full-time student teaching
- Required GPA standards set by the College of Education
