Ivy Tech Community College – Chemistry Transfer Pathway

Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education (Chemistry Licensure)

Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College may transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Middle/Secondary Education – Chemistry program. This pathway prepares you to teach chemistry in grades 5–12 and provides the content knowledge and teaching skills needed for licensure.


What This Agreement Covers

This articulation pathway is designed for Ivy Tech students completing coursework in chemistry, general education, or education foundations who want to become science teachers at the middle or high school level.

At Butler, students complete:

  • Advanced chemistry coursework
  • Teaching methods for science instruction
  • Professional education classes
  • Field experiences in middle and high school settings
  • A full-semester student teaching placement

Most students complete the remainder of the degree in approximately two years after transferring.

Your Ivy Tech coursework typically fulfills several Butler Core requirements (including FYS, AR, NW, PCA, and GHS).

What Courses Will I Take at Butler?

You’ll complete the remaining Chemistry licensure coursework at Butler, plus any remaining Butler requirements identified during transfer evaluation.

Licensure Requirements

To become licensed in Chemistry (grades 5–12), students must complete:

  • Indiana Chemistry content exam
  • Required pedagogy exam
  • CASA or an approved basic skills alternative
  • Criminal history background check
  • CPR/AED certification
  • State-required suicide prevention training
  • All required field experiences
  • Successful completion of full-time student teaching
  • Minimum GPA standards set by the College of Education
