Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences

The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) program is one of the fastest growing programs on campus, paralleling the growth of the healthcare sector in the US economy.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that between 2014 and 2024, healthcare occupations and industries will have the fastest employment growth and will add more jobs than any other single industry in the United States. As the country’s healthcare landscape changes, the education we provide changes to ensure our graduates are optimally prepared to be successful healthcare professionals.

The BSHS program prepares students to thrive in a variety of areas within the healthcare field. Two majors are offered within the undergraduate BSHS program, Health Sciences and Healthcare and Business.

Majors within the BSHS Program

Healthcare and Business Major

The new Healthcare and Business major is a unique undergraduate program intertwining healthcare and business courses to prepare graduates to excel in the business of healthcare. Graduates of this program are prepared to work in a variety of sectors such health insurance, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, data management, and business-related positions in hospitals and health systems. The Healthcare and Business major is also excellent preparation for those planning to pursue graduate programs in areas such as healthcare management, public health, bioinformatics, hospital administration, MBA, etc. With a few additional courses, this could also be a distinguishing undergraduate major for those pursuing competitive clinically based graduate healthcare programs, including medical school.

Healthcare is a competitive field, but what makes Butler's health sciences program really stand out is the overwhelming amount of support from all of the faculty and students. Everyone truly wants to see you succeed, and they're willing to help you in any way possible. The health sciences students are like family to me, and we work together through a challenging curriculum that will ensure that we become the best healthcare providers we can be. The College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences truly exemplifies Butler's community of care. —Courtney Raab '18
