As part of the Academy, you will have continuous work-based learning experiences with the nation’s largest health insurance company through UnitedHealthcare Employer and Individual business, which serves more than 40 million Americans. You can learn more about UnitedHealthcare here.
This program will begin the summer before your sophomore year of college and go until you graduate from Butler. Throughout the academic year, you will work at UnitedHealthcare at least 10 hours a week with the opportunity to work more if your schedule allows. During the summer, you’ll work at UnitedHealthcare full-time. Remote work is a possibility. You will advance to a variety of functional roles throughout the course of the program, experiencing different aspects of work-based learning and earning competitive compensation. If accepted into the program, you will pursue a degree in Marketing with a focus in Risk Management and Insurance from the Lacy School of Business. You’ll take coursework in marketing, sales, insurance, and general business, supplementing your work-based experiences with UnitedHealthcare. Sample courses include Interpersonal Communication, Intro to Risk Management, Health Care Administration Sales, Health Care Marketing, and much more.
You will earn steady income—as a student—through your work experience at UnitedHealthcare, both during the school year and in the summer. You will work part-time at least 10 hours per week during the school year, and full-time throughout the summer. You will earn very competitive compensation that progresses based on the role.
You will be required to obtain your health and life insurance license to enable you to sell insurance products across multiple states. UnitedHealthcare will cover expenses related to exam prep, up to two exam attempts, and any applicable state license costs. The total value of this benefit is approximately $6,000–$7,000.
UnitedHealthcare will launch a mentor program to connect program participants with experienced sales professionals across the organization. These mentors will support you as you connect with the work culture and expectations, and will also serve as a professional development resource as you move through the various sales roles.
During your senior year of college, you will step through the process for consideration of full-time employment. If offered a full-time job, you won’t need to engage in a job search and it will reduce the uncertainty of securing your first career opportunity. This program is designed to provide years of work-based experience through a learn-and-apply approach. Upon successful completion, you will be well-positioned to advance within sales and explore other opportunities with UnitedHealthcare.
