Faculty Development Events (2026–2027)
We deliver integrated professional development by organizing all programs and resources into four strategic pillars to support your teaching, scholarship, and professional growth.
Our calendar includes a variety of standalone learning opportunities alongside our core Fundamentals of Effective University Teaching Series. The Fundamentals Series specifically provides approximately 60 minutes of content and 30 minutes of individual instruction and course development per session. While RSVPs for participation in the full Fundamentals series are encouraged, attendance by individual topic across both the series and standalone workshops is always welcome.
We will continue to schedule faculty development events for the 2026–2027 academic year. Please bookmark this page and check back regularly for updates. Events and details listed are subject to change.
Alignment of Events & Programs to CFE Strategic Pillars
Our events are intentionally mapped across our four CFE pillars to deliver targeted, actionable support at every stage:
- Pillar 1: Continuous Orientation & Onboarding: Assisting new faculty in making a successful transition to Butler through orientation materials, administrative touchpoints, and centralized resources.
- Pillar 2: Fundamentals of University Teaching: Serving as the core engine for pedagogical excellence, offering practical training in planning, engagement, assessment practices, and course redesign.
- Pillar 3: High-Impact Practices & Instructional Strategies: Providing evidence-based teaching strategies and micro-courses to maximize student engagement, persistence, and deep learning.
- Pillar 4: Personalized Pathways for Professional Advancement: Centralizing internal and external offerings, services, and resources to support career growth, leadership, scholarship, and lifelong professional development.
Important Attendance & Registration Details
- RSVP Required: Space is limited. Please email facultyexcellence@butler.edu to reserve your spot at events and to receive Canvas course access to the Fundamentals of University Teaching series. RSVPs for the full Fundamentals series are encouraged, but attendance for any individual topic is welcome.
- Meal Vouchers: Provided for all in-person attendees who have registered for events occurring during lunchtime. These evnts allow for you to grab your lunch from 12:00 PM -12:30 PM, and then have a presentation from 12:30 PM-1:30 PM.
- Remote Option: Can’t attend in person? Email facultyexcellence@butler.edu to receive the listening link for any session.
- Accessibility & Accommodations: To request disability-related accommodations or inquire about accessibility at faculty development events, please contact facultydevelopment@butler.edu. Please allow two weeks’ advance notice in order to allow adequate time to make arrangements. Although attempts will be made to honor accommodation requests with less notice, it cannot be guaranteed that without two weeks notice a reasonable accommodation can be provided.

September 2026
This session explores how aligning your personal teaching philosophy with classroom expectations can significantly boost student engagement and motivation. Participants will spend 60 minutes on interactive instruction exploring motivational frameworks, followed by 30 minutes of guided course development and 1-on-1 support.

Learn practical strategies for converting classroom tension into productive learning discussions. By explicitly identifying different types of intellectual and interpersonal tension, you can establish a healthy climate for civil discourse and constructive debate. High-impact practices play a key role in building a stronger learning environment while helping you manage your overall instructional workload. This workshop highlights research-based techniques proven to support all students, with a focus on helping underrepresented student populations succeed. Faculty will walk away with practical, evidence-based strategies to try in their own classrooms.

October 2026
Dive into foundational learning theory to structure assignments that challenge students without overwhelming them. This workshop focuses on scaffolding techniques using Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development to keep students actively engaged and motivated. Educators spend a huge amount of time grading assignments, writing lesson plans, and keeping up with endless emails. Artificial intelligence can take on some of that heavy lifting by streamlining administrative tasks and simplifying processes. Beyond saving time, AI assistants can also help quickly generate real-world scenarios and debate topics for your students. This workshop covers practical ways to use AI to lighten your daily workload and enhance your teaching.

This session offers evidence-based active learning techniques designed to encourage broad participation, equitable dialogue, and lively discussion across all student demographics. Address the challenge of student reading compliance and comprehension. Discover practical prompt structures and social reading strategies that motivate students to complete assigned readings and arrive prepared for deep critical analysis. Working effectively with others is a vital life skill, and group projects give students a safe space to practice navigating team dynamics and accountability. Collaborative assignments help students connect course content directly to real-world soft skills and practical problem-solving. For instructors, group work can also streamline grading and feedback, as there are fewer individual projects to evaluate. This workshop explores how to set up group projects that benefit both you and your students.

Many students come to class with worldviews limited to their immediate surroundings and social media feeds. Intentionally diversifying your curriculum helps prepare them for a broader world by exposing them to different cultures, customs, and perspectives. Simple choices, such as incorporating readings from underrepresented authors or facilitating civil discourse on tough topics, can be truly transformative for learners. This workshop offers straightforward ways to broaden your course content and foster a more inclusive classroom.

Free course materials remove a major financial burden for students while ensuring everyone has what they need to succeed from day one. Using Open Educational Resources (OER) gives you peace of mind while opening the door to flexible, high-quality content. This workshop explores the world of open-access materials and shows you how to easily supplement or replace your current textbook. You will learn where to find these resources and how they can simplify your prep work.
