Intramural Handbook & Rules

Intramural sports provide opportunities for experiential learning for the entire Butler community, and we strive to foster a spirit of sportsmanship and fair play among participants and spectators. Teams and individuals participating in intramural sports should do so with the attitude that good sportsmanship is an integral part of the activity. Read the Intramural Handbook and the following sport-specific rules for the policies and procedures used as guidelines for participation. Everyone is expected to comply with the spirit and letter of these rules.
Don’t hate. Officiate.
Do you have a passion for working in sports? Officials are essential for nearly all Intramurals team sports, including flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball. Train to be an official and become an integral part of the Intramurals season.
Intramural FAQs
RecWell Intramurals offer a fun, inclusive way to stay active and connected through sport. With a variety of leagues and events held right on campus, students, faculty, and staff can team up to compete in a structured, low-pressure environment. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, enjoy friendly competition, and support your physical and mental well-being. At the heart of our Intramurals program are the values of sportsmanship, community, and respect, because how you play matters just as much as the score.
Any Butler student, faculty, or staff member with a current RecWell membership is eligible to participate in Intramurals.
All leagues, scheduling, and registration for Intramurals are through Fusion Play! Join the fun! Download the Fusion Play app and log in with your Butler credentials.
Yes. Members of related and unrelated Club Sports are eligible to participate in all Intramurals if desired.
Individual participants can register as a “free agent” in Fusion Play, within the sport(s) of their choice. This allows the participant to create a free agent profile that team captains can view/use to invite free agents when they need additional team members.
Additionally, some team captains choose to set their team rosters as “open,” which allows individual players to simply add themselves to that team’s roster.
For officiated sports (indoor soccer, basketball, flag football, soccer), all team members must wear matching-colored jerseys (color selected during the team registration process). For all Intramural activities, your Butler ID is required to check in. Additionally, each team must have the minimum number of players required (see specific sport rules for details) present and checked in by no later than their scheduled game time.
Any time that games are canceled, all impacted teams will be notified via email. Typically, on days with inclement weather, decisions will be made by 3:00 PM for games that evening. When inclement weather arises during play in the evening, decisions will be made by on-site staff and communicated to teams.
Regular season games cannot be rescheduled; however, each team can “default” one game per season in the event they know they will not be able to attend. Defaulting a game will result in a loss, but will not prevent playoff eligibility.
Playoff games can be rescheduled if availability exists. Playoff reschedule requests will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis but cannot be guaranteed.
