Volunteer Opportunities

  • Recess All-Stars
    • Role: Assist the Playworks Program Coordinator (Coach) at an elementary school in creating a safe and inclusive playground and be a significant presence by organizing and playing games with 20+ students. Focus students’ attention on having fun, not on winning/losing. Encourage safe, healthy play and positive conflict resolution through role modeling and active participation.
    • Key Skills: Must love to play, lead activities with kids and have the ability to model positive behavior. Actively engage students in teamwork, sportsmanship and physical activity. Demonstrate ability to build rapport, trust and respect with students.
    • Available days/times: M-F between the hours of 10am and 2pm
    • Ideal Commitment: 12-36 hours per school year. Weekly, bi-monthly and monthly schedules can be arranged based on your schedule
  • League Ref (4-8 openings/year) (Girls Basketball, Co-Ed Volleyball)
    • *Leagues are developmental in nature, not competitive.*
    • Duties: Referee league games, with focus on teaching players the basic game skills and teamwork. Communicate with coaches and league manager to ensure games run smoothly and that league rules–respect the game, play hard, have fun–are being followed by coaches, volunteers, players, and spectators.
    • Key Skills: Understand game rules and core skills required. Experience refereeing games and or coaching helpful. Ability to adapt games to include players of all ability levels and provide a safe environment for all players. Calm demeanor and willingness to help players grow and develop as athletes and students.
    • Available Day/Hour: Basketball (Jan – Feb. Wednesdays 4:30-6:00 PM or Saturday 10:00-11:30 AM) Volleyball (March. Dates and Time TBD)
    • Varies based on sport and league assignment
    • Ideal Commitment: 2 hours per week for 6 weeks plus one weekend day for the end of league extravaganza. **League Ref positions can be shared between two people*
  • Free Agent (Program Support)
    • Weekday or Weeknight Opportunity
    • Opportunities Vary
    • Duties: Participate in various kid-focused projects, i.e. Junior Coach Leadership conferences, League cheer squads, game jamborees, and playground rehab projects. These are short-term commitments with big impact.
    • Key Skills: Willingness to jump in and join the fun. Ideal Free Agents are enthusiastic supporters of Playworks who can bring a variety of skills to the table and who are team players willing to cheer loudly, work hard and provide a burst of energy and effort. Additional skills vary by project
    • Available days/times: Vary by project
    • Ideal Commitment: On-call availability for one school year
  • Administrative Support Opportunities
    • These opportunities connect volunteers with the administrative side of Playworks. By lending your expertise in the areas of fund development, marketing/communications and community engagement, we can continue to grow Playworks Indiana and bring the power of play to more Indianapolis students.
      • The Ambassador (Community Awareness)
        • Flexible schedule
        • Role: Become a trained Playworks Ambassador and share the program with potential stakeholders, businesses and community through presentations and friend-raisers. Help us share our story and reach new audiences.
        • Key Skills: Detail oriented with strong organizational, oral and written communication skills.
        • Day/Hour: Vary by project
        • Commitment: Ongoing
      • The Sideline Report (Communications/Marketing)
        • Ongoing Weekday Opportunity
        • Duties: Write newsletter stories and media releases, assist with social media, aid in marketing campaigns, develop communication plan.
        • Requirements: Detail-oriented with strong organizational, oral and written communication skills. Experience and/or enthusiasm for using Social Media and the web for community outreach. Hard-working and able to work independently.
