Mission
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world's leading nonprofit health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases. It does so by funding worldwide research; by providing comprehensive health care services and support to MDA families nationwide; and by rallying communities to fight back through advocacy, fundraising and local engagement.
Volunteer Opportunities
MDA Summer Camp – Annual summer camp for children ages 6-17 with muscle disease. Volunteer camp counselors needed for 1 week. All campers are paired 1-on-1 with a volunteer camp counselor. Volunteers act as “buddies” to the campers and help the campers get around the facility so that they may participate in activities such as swimming, sports, arts & crafts, etc. Volunteers may be called upon to push wheelchairs and assist with bathroom duties, dressing and feeding. Some campers just need a little help getting around, others require total care and use power wheelchairs. Volunteers will be paired with a camper they feel comfortable caring for and will receive training on how to be a volunteer prior to the camp week. It’s a great volunteer experience for someone going into the medical field, nursing, OT/PT/recreational therapies, education or other related fields. Being a camp volunteer is a 24-7 job, which adds up to over 145 hours of volunteer service! If interested please contact Kelly Reed, Camp Director at (317) 824-4800 or KReed@mdausa.org
