The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Instructional Opportunities:
    • SCRUBBY BEAR – Created in 1984, Scrubby Bear is still fighting germs today! This simple, free program is designed to help kids understand why hand washing is important. With songs, stories and games, kids learn “Don’t get sick, wash up quick!” Last school year we presented 71 lessons to over 1,300 kids.

    • RESILIENCY FOR SENIORS- As a disaster preparedness organization it’s important that we get our safety tips out to everyone. Meet with seniors and share information on disaster kits, making disaster plans, staying informed, and Citizens CPR. All of our lessons are free to the public upon request

    • THE PILLOWCASE PROJECT – Help children in grades 1-6 know what to do during a disaster, how to cope with stress, and build a 24 hour disaster kit together.

    • PREPAREDNESS HEALTH AND SAFETY- Teach adults how to properly perform CPR and First Aid for Certification.

  • Special Event Opportunities:
    • SPECIAL EVENT TEAM – Help community members by bringing disaster materials to local festivals and neighborhood events. This is a great opportunity if you like to chat and meet new people. Thank you for keeping us visible.

    • BOOKMOBILE – Our Bookmobile visits Title-1 schools and visits over 4,500 kids each year to give away a free book to every child. Volunteer as a drive or as an attendant, we’d love to have you.

    • FIRST AID STATION TEAM (F.A.S.T.) – Support community wellness by keeping folks safe at community events like the Indiana State Fair, local events, and Indian’s Baseball Games.

  • Building Opportunities:
    • **TRANSPORTATION – Drive clients from their home to medical appointments in Indianapolis. Drive our cars and support neighbors health and wellness. This is an early morning opportunity, from 7:00am-2:00pm
      • Ongoing, and individual. Commitment of one time per month.
    • Board Members- Serve on local boards and help with fundraising and marketing programs. Be the face of the Red Cross in your community and ensure we are serving your community well.

    • CLIENT ASSISTANCE- Provide emotional and financial support to families affected by disaster.
      • Ongoing, and individual. Monthly commitment.
    • EXTERNAL RELATIONS- Serve as community liaison, attending community meetings, providing sheltering agreements, and writing memorandums for partner groups.

    • Data Entry- Supporting community needs produces lots of paperwork, can you help input, analyze, and move data?
      • One time or ongoing, individual.
    • Office Assistant- Welcome clients, answer phones, and serve as the go to person in the department of service. Multi-taskers encouraged to apply!

    • Grant Researching/Writing-Assist the fundraising team as they research, write and execute grants.
      • One time or ongoing, group, and individual.
  • Disaster Services Opportunities:
    • Disaster Action Team (D.A.T.) – A 24 hour service that responds to local house fires and other emergencies. This year over 1000 families were served by the Disaster Action Team.
      • Ongoing, and individual. On call two times per month.
    • National Disaster Action Team- If you enjoy responding locally, you might enjoy responding globally to provide disaster relief throughout the United States.
      • Ongoing as needed, individual.
    • Mass Care- Become trained in opening shelters, feeding clients, and moving disaster items to areas where they are most needed.
    • Information and Planning- gather, analyze and distribute disaster information to manage the scope of the disaster.

    • Logistics- Support disaster relief efforts through procuring, transporting and managing in kind donations.
      • Ongoing as needed, individual.
    • Staff Services- Work as staff relations, coordinate staffing needs, and provide human resource services.
      • Ongoing as needed, individual.
    • Disaster Services Technology- Set up technology at the disaster site, support end users of equipment, and handle connectivity. Everyone is happy to see these folks arrive on a disaster site.
