Volunteer Information

Mission
Brooke’s Place provides support groups, therapy services and community education to empower children, teens, young adults and their families to thrive in the midst of grief. Experiencing the death of someone significant can be very isolating for children, and their behavior can often times be misinterpreted as something other than an expression of grief. Risks of unaddressed grief in a child includes isolation, substance abuse, depression, poor school performance, aggression, and anxiety. Because 1 in 7 children will experience the death of a parent, sibling or close loved one by the time they are 20, Brooke’s Place works to create a community where every young person living with grief feels safe, supported and understood during their personal grief journey. BROOKE’S PLACE IS BUILT ON THESE PRINCIPLES: 1. Grief is a natural reaction to the death of a loved one for young people as well as adults 2. Within each individual is the natural capacity to heal oneself 3. The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual 4. Caring and acceptance assist in the healing process Our caring programs provide hope, help and healing by giving individuals a safe place to grieve.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Brooke’s Place provides peer support groups for young people ages 3 – 29, who have experienced the death of a significant person.

    1. Facilitator volunteer role: provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals ages 3-29 years old, and their caregivers, to grieve the way they need to grieve. Facilitators listen to and validate the feelings, thoughts, and words that are shared during the support groups and let the participants lead you through their grief journey. NO COUNSELING background is required! Commitment: 2x/month from 5:30-9:00pm on a set schedule; minimum 1 year volunteer commitment.

    2. Buddy volunteer role: often includes more behind-the-scenes effort and less direct contact with families. Duties include preparing rooms for evening activities, greeting families as they arrive, set up/clean up for dinner, serving pizza & drinks, setting up the lending-library, and helping with clean-up after program night activities. Commitment: 2x/month from 5:30-8:30pm on a set schedule; minimum 6 month commitment.

**We do offer practicum and internship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.**
