Ivy Tech Community College – Social Studies Transfer Pathway

Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education (Social Studies Licensure)

Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Middle/Secondary Education – Social Studies program. This pathway prepares you for licensure to teach social studies subjects (e.g., history, government, economics, geography) in grades 5–12.


What This Agreement Covers

This articulation pathway is intended for Ivy Tech students completing coursework in history, psychology, sociology, political science, education, or general studies who want to pursue teaching at the middle or high school level.

The program at Butler combines:

  • Foundational and advanced coursework in social sciences
  • Middle/secondary education pedagogy
  • Field experiences in 5–12 classrooms
  • A culminating semester of full-time student teaching

Students typically complete the remainder of the bachelor’s degree in two years of full-time study after transferring.

Your Ivy Tech coursework typically fulfills several Butler Core requirements (including FYS, AR, NW, PCA, and GHS).

What Courses Will I Take at Butler?

You’ll complete the remaining Social Studies licensure coursework at Butler, plus any remaining Butler requirements identified during transfer evaluation.

Licensure Requirements

To qualify for licensure in Social Studies (grades 5–12), students must complete:

  • Indiana Social Studies content exam(s) (may include history, government, economics, geography, depending on chosen focus)
  • Required pedagogy licensure exam
  • CASA or an approved basic skills alternative
  • Criminal history background check
  • CPR/AED certification
  • State-required suicide prevention training
  • Successful completion of all field experiences
  • Successful full-time student teaching
  • Minimum GPA requirements set by the College of Education
