If you’re completing an Associate of Arts at Ivy Tech Community College, this pathway outlines how your credits can apply toward Butler’s Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Most students transfer credits and then complete the remaining credits at Butler.

This articulation pathway supports Ivy Tech students completing Liberal Arts or humanities-based coursework who want a smooth transition into Butler’s Philosophy major.

The BA in Philosophy emphasizes:

  • Ethics and moral reasoning
  • Logic and analytical thinking
  • History of philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary)
  • Social, political, and existential philosophy
  • Interdisciplinary perspectives on human life and society

Most students complete the remaining degree requirements in two years after transferring.

Based on the articulation agreement, Ivy Tech graduates typically receive credit in the following areas:

  • First-Year Seminar (FYS101 and FYS102)
  • Global & Historical Studies (GHS) (2 courses)
  • Analytical Reasoning (AR)
  • Natural World (NW) (lab science requirement)
  • Perspective in the Creative Arts (PCA)
  • Social World (SW)
  • Foreign Language requirement (2 courses at the 200 level or above)
  • Philosophy credit, including:
  • Ivy Tech PHIL 101 → Butler TI243-PL Knowledge & Reality
  • Ivy Tech PHIL 102 → Butler TI244-PL Ethics, the Good Life and Society
  • Elective credit that can be used toward an optional minor

What Courses Will I Take at Butler?

After transfer, students typically complete the core Philosophy sequence plus upper-level electives and remaining Butler requirements. Coursework often includes:

  • History of Ancient Philosophy
  • History of Modern Philosophy
  • Seminar in Philosophy
