Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education (French Licensure)
Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Middle/Secondary Education – French teacher preparation program. This pathway leads to licensure to teach French in grades 5–12.

What This Agreement Covers
This transfer pathway is designed for Ivy Tech students who have completed coursework in French language, education foundations, or general studies and want to pursue teaching at the middle or high school level.
The program includes:
- Advanced French language and culture study
- Teacher preparation coursework
- Field placements in grades 5–12
- A full semester of student teaching
Students transfer credits and typically complete the remaining requirements at Butler in about two years of full-time study.

The agreement’s Ivy Tech plan includes a set of general education + language requirements, including French coursework.
This pathway typically fulfills Butler Core requirements in areas such as:
- First-Year Seminar equivalents
- Analytic Reasoning
- Natural World (lab science)
- Global & Historical Studies
- Text & Ideas / Creative Arts (via approved Humanities/Arts selections)
- French language sequence (French courses listed in the agreement)
What Courses Will I Take at Butler?
You’ll complete the remaining Butler coursework for the Middle Secondary Education major + French concentration, typically including:
- Upper-division education coursework and required field experiences
- Remaining French content/concentration requirements
- Student teaching requirements and final program milestones (as outlined by the College of Education)
Licensure Requirements
To qualify for licensure in French (grades 5–12), you must complete:
- Indiana French content exam
- Required pedagogy exam
- CASA or approved basic skills alternative
- Criminal history background check
- CPR/AED certification
- State-required suicide prevention training
- Successful completion of all fieldwork
- Full-time student teaching semester
- Minimum GPA standards set by the College of Education
