Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (K–6) with Required Minor in Diverse Learners
Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer up to 60 credit hours toward Butler University’s Elementary Education (K–6) program. This pathway includes a required Minor in Diverse Learners, designed to prepare future teachers for inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive classrooms.

What This Agreement Covers
This pathway is ideal for Ivy Tech students completing Education, Early Childhood Education, Human Services, or General Studies degrees who want to become licensed elementary teachers (grades K–6).
The Butler program combines:
- Foundational coursework in child development and instructional methods
- Inclusive and special education preparation
- Extensive field experiences beginning early in the program
- A culminating semester of full-time student teaching
Students transfer 60 credits and complete the remaining program requirements in approximately two years of full-time study.
What’s Fulfilled Through Your Ivy Tech Degree
This pathway includes two options, depending on how you complete your Ivy Tech coursework:
Option A (baseline pathway)
- Transfer credit from Ivy Tech: 57 hours
- Remaining at Butler: 78 hours
- Total program hours: 135
Option B (maximize transfer credit)
- Transfer credit from Ivy Tech: 65 hours
- Remaining at Butler: 71 hours
- Total program hours: 136
Your Ivy Tech coursework applies toward major prerequisites and several Butler requirements. The “maximize transfer” option includes additional Ivy Tech courses specifically intended to increase transferable credit.
What Courses Will I Take at Butler?
You’ll complete the remaining Elementary Education K–6 program coursework at Butler, plus the Diverse Learners minor requirements and any remaining Butler requirements identified during transfer evaluation.
Licensure Requirements
To become licensed as a K–6 teacher in Indiana, students must complete:
- Elementary Education content licensure exams (multiple subtests)
- Required pedagogy exam(s)
- CASA or an approved basic skills alternative
- Criminal history background check
- CPR/AED certification
- State-required suicide prevention training
- Successful completion of all field placements
- Successful completion of a full semester of student teaching
- Minimum GPA standards set by the College of Education
