Ivy Tech Community College – Creative Writing Transfer Pathway

Bachelor of Arts in English (Creative Writing Track)

Students who complete an Associate of Arts at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Bachelor of Arts in English – Creative Writing Track. This pathway is ideal for students who want to study fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and literary craft while completing a flexible, humanities-based degree.

What This Agreement Covers

This transfer pathway ensures a smooth transition from Ivy Tech’s Liberal Arts curriculum into Butler’s Creative Writing program. Ivy Tech students enter with strong foundations in writing, literature, humanities, and world languages, and then build toward upper-level creative writing workshops, literature courses, and a senior capstone seminar.

Students typically enter Butler with junior standing and complete the remaining degree requirements in approximately two years.

What’s Fulfilled Through Your Ivy Tech Degree

According to the agreement, Ivy Tech coursework fulfills many Butler Core and English foundation requirements, including:

  • Foreign Language requirement (14 credits, including two courses at the 200 level or above)
  • English/literature coursework (a range of 6–15 credits, depending on what you completed)
  • Electives (typically 5–14 credits)

What Courses Will I Take at Butler?

You’ll complete the remaining Creative Writing + English coursework at Butler (mostly upper-division), plus any remaining Butler requirements identified during transfer evaluation.

Licensure Requirements

This program is non-licensure. Students completing EN 455 – Writing in the Schools (ICR) will engage in supervised school-based writing instruction but do not receive teaching licensure. No state licensure exams are required.
