Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education (English Licensure)
Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Middle/Secondary Education – English teacher preparation program. This pathway leads to licensure to teach English/Language Arts in grades 5–12.

What This Agreement Covers
This transfer pathway supports Ivy Tech students—especially those completing English, Liberal Arts, Education, or General Studies degrees—who want to become middle or high school English teachers.
The degree prepares students in:
- Literature and writing
- Adolescent literacy
- Secondary classroom instruction
- Curriculum, assessment, and inclusion
- Field experiences leading to full-time student teaching
Students enter with junior standing and typically complete the remaining requirements at Butler in two years of full-time study.
What’s Fulfilled Through Your Ivy Tech Degree
Per the agreement, Ivy Tech coursework typically fulfills:
- First-Year Seminar (FYS 101 & FYS 102 equivalents)
- Analytic Reasoning (AR)
- Natural World (NW – lab science)
- Perspectives in the Creative Arts (PCA)
- Global & Historical Studies (GHS – two courses)
- Foreign language (6–8 credits)
It also includes English and education-related coursework/electives aligned to the pathway (ex: intro literature + survey areas + education courses).
What Courses Will I Take at Butler?
At Butler, you’ll complete the remaining coursework for the Middle Secondary Education major + English concentration, including:
- Upper-division education coursework and required field experiences
- Upper-division English/concentration coursework
- Student teaching requirements and final program milestones
Licensure Requirements
To earn licensure in English/Language Arts (grades 5–12), you must complete:
- Passing scores on Indiana English content exam(s)
- Passing score on the pedagogy licensure exam
- CASA or approved basic skills alternative
- Criminal history background check
- CPR/AED certification
- State-required suicide prevention training
- All required field placements
- Full-time student teaching semester
- Minimum GPA standards required by the College of Education
