Bachelor of Science in Middle/Secondary Education (Spanish Licensure)
Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s Middle/Secondary Education – Spanish teacher preparation program. This pathway prepares you for licensure to teach Spanish in grades 5–12.

What This Agreement Covers
This transfer pathway allows Ivy Tech students—especially those completing degrees that include Spanish language study, education foundations, or general studies—to move efficiently into Butler’s nationally recognized College of Education.
The degree combines:
- Advanced Spanish language and culture study
- Teacher preparation coursework
- Field placements in grades 5–12
- A full semester of student teaching
Students enter Butler with junior standing after transferring credits and complete the remaining teacher preparation curriculum in approximately two years of full-time study.
What’s Fulfilled Through Your Ivy Tech Degree
Per the pathway, Ivy Tech coursework typically fulfills:
- First-Year Seminar (FYS 101 & FYS 102 equivalents)
- Analytic Reasoning (AR)
- Natural World (NW – lab science)
- Text & Ideas (TI)
- Perspectives in the Creative Arts (PCA)
- Global & Historical Studies (GHS – two courses)
- MidSec-Ed_Spanish
- Spanish language sequence (Spanish coursework listed in the agreement)
What Courses Will I Take at Butler?
You’ll complete the remaining Butler coursework for the Middle Secondary Education major + Spanish concentration, which typically includes:
- Upper-division education coursework and required field experiences
- Remaining Spanish content/concentration requirements
- Student teaching requirements and final program milestones (as outlined by the College of Education)
Licensure Requirements
To earn licensure in Spanish (grades 5–12), students must meet the following requirements:
- Passing score on the Indiana-approved Spanish content exam
- Passing score on required pedagogy licensure exam(s)
- CASA or approved alternative for basic skills requirement
- Criminal history background check
- CPR/AED certification
- State-required suicide prevention training
- Successful completion of all field experiences
- Successful completion of full-time student teaching
- Minimum GPA requirements as set by the College of Education
