Ivy Tech Community College – Youth & Community Development Transfer Pathway

Online Bachelor of Science in Youth & Community Development

Students who complete an eligible associate degree at Ivy Tech Community College can transfer credit hours toward Butler University’s 120-credit Bachelor of Science in Youth & Community Development (YCD). This pathway is designed for students who want to work with youth in schools, nonprofits, mentoring programs, community organizations, or recreation settings.

What This Agreement Covers

This transfer agreement allows Ivy Tech students—especially those completing Human Services, Education, or related associate degrees—to seamlessly continue their studies at Butler.

The program emphasizes:

  • Child & adolescent development
  • Youth programming
  • Community engagement
  • Social/emotional learning
  • Leadership and advocacy in youth-serving settings

Students enter Butler with junior standing after transferring credits and complete the remaining program requirements fully online or in hybrid formats (depending on course availability).

What’s Fulfilled Through Your Ivy Tech Degree

According to the pathway, Ivy Tech coursework typically fulfills many Butler Core and foundational requirements, including:

  • First-Year Seminar (FYS 101 & FYS 102 equivalents)
  • Analytic Reasoning (AR)
  • Natural World (NW – lab science)
  • Text & Ideas (TI)
  • Perspectives in the Creative Arts (PCA)
  • Global & Historical Studies (GHS – two courses)
  • Youth-and-Community-Development
  • Foreign language (6–8 credits)

The agreement also builds in Youth & Community Development–aligned electives and recommends exploring introductory courses connected to concentration areas.

What Courses Will I Take at Butler?

At Butler, you’ll complete the remaining Youth & Community Development major coursework (including upper-division requirements) and finalize any remaining Core items. You’ll also shape your plan around a concentration area (and potentially a minor), based on your goals and interests.

Licensure or Credential Requirements

The YCD program is non-licensure—meaning it does not lead to K–12 teacher certification.

However, students complete required professional clearances and training as part of field placements, which may include:

  • Background check
  • TB test (if required by placement)
  • CPR certification
  • Youth safety and mandatory reporting training
  • Internship eligibility requirements
  • Minimum GPA requirement for field placement (typically 2.7–3.0 depending on site)

These requirements ensure you’re prepared for work with youth in community settings.
