Hub on Black Affairs and Community Engagement

A vibrant and Afrocentric space dedicated to the pursuit of social and racial justice.

In the Fall of 2020, as both a reflection towards Butler’s abolitionist history and in line with the movement(s) for Black lives, the Hub on Black Affairs and Community Engagement was founded in partnership with emeritus Professor of Political Science, Dr. Terri Jett. The Hub serves as an intersectional space, dedicated to deepening and elevating the knowledge of Black history, experiences, and possibilities, the social aspects of Black life, and the connection between Butler University and central Indiana.

About the Hub

The Hub on Black Affairs and Community Engagement offers an opportunity for the entire Butler community to gain a deeper understanding of Black culture, voice, history, experiences and intellectualism. Through engagement with Butler students, faculty, staff, organizations, or institutions across the Central Indiana community; the Hub serves as an intellectual and physical center promoting Black intellectual life through programmatic, curricular, and networking initiatives.

As Butler University prepares to engage in a new strategic direction, The Hub leadership is taking the time to enhance its contribution to the Butler campus and community. The Hub remains a Black centric educational and informational space that explores and shares Black intellectual history and progress and looks forward to sharing our new plans with you soon.

In the meantime, the Butler community is welcome to visit the Black Hub physical space and follow us on social media for programs and activities that will be held this year.

Visiting Black Intellectuals

The Visiting Black Intellectual Series includes public lectures and performances, various interactions with Butler faculty, staff and students, and facilitation of our deeper commitment and engagement with the Indianapolis community.

Empowering Students

We provide ongoing communication and advocacy for the support of the Black Student Union (BSU), other campus groups that pertain to Black experiences, and all Butler students interested in Black history, experiences, possibilities, and the fight against racism.

Supporting Faculty & Staff

The Hub on Black Affairs supports Black faculty and staff affinity groups, including but not limited to the Brothas and SISTAS groups, that aim to make space for Black joy, community, mentorship, wellness, and development.
