History: Recommended Three-Year Path

Notes:

  • Five upper-division courses (300-level and above) from at least three of the following areas: Asia, Europe, Latin America, United States, Africa and the Middle East, or World/Transnational History
  • *Independent study credits and study abroad credits can count towards the upperdivision course requirement
  • Summer credits that count as HST credit will reduce the number of HST courses needed at that equivalent level.
  • It is important for the student to make sure that at least one of the selected elective classes fulfills ICR, unless the student takes HST205: “Exploring the City,” which counts as lower-level US history and ICR requirement
  • The number of summer credits or regular semester credits could be reduced if the student brings in credits at the time of matriculation (AP, IB, Dual Deg., etc.). We would note that AP History credits are brought in by a significant number of our current majors, and it is very likely that many of the students pursuing the 3 have 3 credits of U.S. or European lower– year degree would level history credit completed before commencing at Butler.
  • Summer HST courses are rare. It would be necessary to identify suitable summer study abroad and internship opportunities ahead of time to guarantee the success of the program. 3 credit independent studies connected to study abroad or internship experiences, or linked with other research or thesis work, could be conducted virtually with Butler History faculty. Again, a student with transfer credits at the start of Year One might not have to stick to such a rigorous summer schedule.
  • There is reasonable flexibility within this schedule and various courses could be swapped across semesters with the same ultimate results; however, there are a few aspects of the schedule that should be maintained:
    • HST101 should be completed in either semester of the first year;
    • The two courses comprising the theory and methods sequence—HST301 and HST302—should be taken in the 2nd year;
    • HST401 should be taken in the student’s final year; it is often only taught in the fall, so the student should plan to take it then
  • All Liberal Arts and Sciences students are required to take two semesters of language at the 200 level or above. Students wishing to complete their studies in three years should try their best to test out of one or more semesters of language. The schedule presumes the student has not tested out of any courses. Needless to say, testing in to a language at the 200 level or above could reduce a student’s average semester load.
  • Despite the shorter schedule, students would still be able to add a minor, study ab road for a full semester, pursue a combined major, or maybe even add a second major. The proposed schedule presumes that the student will be completing a minimum of a 6credit study abroad experience, which would waive the requirement of a second GHS cours e. A second GHS course would have to be added to the schedule if the student did not study abroad in a program qualifying for 6 credits or more.
