The Junior Year Plan for Success Begins Now

As a junior, you might feel like it’s time to start thinking about the college search process. If you’re in that mindset, congratulations, you’re already a step ahead! If you’re not, we can certainly help you get there. While we have a complete Plan for Success on the parent section of our website, below is a brief list to help get you started:

  • Attend college fairs at your high school or in your community. View a complete list on www.butler.edu/visit. Don’t see your area or high school listed? Keep checking back for updates or contact your admission counselor.
  • Talk to your guidance counselor about taking the SAT or ACT. You can also take the PSAT for an opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • Now is a good time to take your extracurricular involvement to the next level. It’s important to have a strong résumé when applying to college.
  • Speaking of résumés, this is a great time to begin working on yours. Start putting together a list of your accomplishments and involvements and update it as needed. While Butler does not require a résumé, we strongly recommend that you have one.
  • Register with NCAA Clearinghouse if you plan to play Division I college athletics. You can find more information on their website at www.ncaa.org.
  • Plan your senior year. It’s important to discuss your course schedule with your guidance counselor to ensure you meet the graduation requirements. We also suggest that you begin to think about Butler University’s admission requirements when filling out your senior schedule.

What Can I Do If I’m Not Admitted?

Transfer to ButlerUnfortunately, not everyone receives the admission decision they were hoping for when they started this process. If Butler is the school you want to attend, this initial admission decision isn’t the your last opportunity to apply. If you were not offered admission as a freshman and would like to transfer to Butler after attending another college or university, we recommend that you spend at least one year with that institution before submitting a new application for admission. By the numbers, some programs at Butler have a slightly lower freshman acceptance rate because of the limited number of spots available for incoming students, specifically pre-pharmacy and pre-physician assistant.

  • For pre-pharmacy, it is still recommended that transfer applicants complete at least one year of coursework at another institution before applying again to the program. Students can apply to the pre-pharmacy phase of the program as a transfer student if their college GPA is 3.0 or higher. Additionally, if a student has successfully completed all required pre-requisite courses and also has taken the PCAT, he/she can then apply directly to the 4-year professional phase of the pharmacy program.
  • To apply for the 3-year professional phase of the physician assistant program, a student must have completed or will complete a Bachelor’s degree prior to the fall semester he/she intends to enroll. This Bachelor’s degree must include the successful completion all of the required physician assistant pre-requisite courses.

I’m Admitted! What Next?

First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to Butler University! We are very excited to welcome you to the Class of 2017. Now that you’ve been admitted, you’re probably starting to wonder what you should be doing next. Just know that we’re here to help! We’ve come up with a short list to get you started:

  1. Attend an admitted student event. We offer a variety of events including academic days, basketball games, regional receptions, and more. Whatever you choose, we have the perfect visit for you. You can register for these events via the emails we send you or by logging onto your student status page.
  2. Submit your deposit. By submitting your deposit, you guarantee your spot in the freshmen class. Deposits are fully refundable until May 1. Visit our admitted student page for more information and directions on submitting your deposit.
  3. Visit campus. If you’ve never been to Butler before, you’re really missing out. We strongly encourage admitted students who haven’t been to campus to visit this spring. We offer individual visits and True Blue days to help you make an informed decision. Once you get to campus, you’ll fall in love!
  4. Select an Early New Student Registration date. Once you’ve submitted your deposit, you can select which Early New Student Registration date you would like to attend. Registering early allows you to meet with an academic advisor to discuss course options and schedule, meet classmates in a small group setting and get your college photo ID.
  5. Start thinking about housing options. Your housing information and contract will be sent once your enrollment deposit has been received. Residence hall choices: First-year men live in Ross Hall; first-year women may select either Ross Hall (co-ed) or Schwitzer Hall (all women). Transfer and international students have additional options. Roommate matches are made based on personal preferences students select on the housing contract (including things like, “Are you an early riser or a night owl?” “Do you study to music or in complete silence?”) Housing and roommate assignments will be mailed in July.
  6. Send in your final transcript. Arrange to have all of your final academic transcripts sent to the Office of Admission at the end of the school year with your date of graduation posted. If you are taking AP exams, have your scores sent to Butler University.

Start Thinking About Financial Aid

We realize that it isn’t December 15 yet and you have not received your admission decision. However, it’s never too early to start thinking about financial aid. We’ve created a helpful checklist for you to get a head start on financial aid:

  1. Did you know that you are eligible for academic scholarships just for applying to Butler University? Award amounts range from $6,000 to $16,000 and vary each academic year based on the quality of the applicant pool. You will receive your scholarship amount approximately two weeks following your admission decision.
  2. File your Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1. (Estimate the required tax information if your tax forms are still incomplete.) You must complete the FAFSA by March 1. Keep a photocopy for your records.
  3. If you haven’t already, start researching outside scholarship opportunities. Search for outside scholarships on Zinch.com, Cappex.com, scholarships.com, fastweb.com and more!
  4. On March 15, we send out the Financial Aid Notification package. This includes the types and amounts of financial aid for which you qualify, the cost of attendance and your expected family contribution.
  5. If your family’s financial circumstances have changed significantly since you submitted the FAFSA, contact financial aid immediately.
  6. If your financial aid application is selected for verification, the school will require you to submit additional documentation, such as signed copies of your W-2 statement, tax returns and 1099 forms. The federal government selects 30% of the FAFSAs for verification.
  7. Finally, decide which school you want to attend and accept the offer (hopefully ours). We’ll show you how to do this when the time comes!

The Waiting Game

So you’ve applied and are now waiting for your admission decision to be sent. While some might say filling out applications is the most grueling step in the process, I’d have to disagree. Waiting has to be, by far, the hardest part.

While you’re waiting for December 15 (that’s the day we’ll be mailing your admission decisions), there are plenty of things you can do to stay busy and keep your mind off of that fat envelope:

  1. If you haven’t been to campus yet, now is a great time to visit. Visiting can also serve as a great way for you to meet current students and really begin narrowing down your choices.
  2. Start researching your financial aid options. You can begin filing the FAFSA on January 1, but there’s no reason you can’t start filling it out now.
  3. Begin looking for outside scholarships. Sites such as Zinch, Cappex and scholarships.com are great ways to find extra cash to finance your college education.
  4. Stay connected. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter for important announcements and exciting updates. Feel free to leave us a comment on our fan page or tweet us using #Butler2017.

So, You’ve Applied…Now What?

It’s been a busy fall semester. You’ve been scrambling around desperately trying to keep up with your senior year classes and other in-and-out-of-school activities. You’ve been awake at all hours trying to complete applications and stay ahead of deadlines. And oh yeah, you’ve been thinking (and worrying) quite a bit too about college. You’re probably worn out from looking at college brochures, visiting websites, comparing college rankings, traveling around going on college visits, talking to your high school counselor and perhaps even taking one too many of those virtual tours.

Despite all of this you’ve somehow managed to successfully submit several (or perhaps more than several) college applications. Relief sets in now that you’ve managed to complete this part of the process. Time to kick back and relax!  Not quite – the most difficult part is now upon you…WAITING. You thought the hardest part would be deciding where to apply and writing those dreaded college essays. Yet, you now find yourself waiting, almost paralyzed not knowing what your future holds and wondering what some phantom college admission officer will think of your application.

Does this sound familiar? I’m guessing so. Well take comfort in knowing that pretty much every college-bound high school senior is experiencing similar stresses. You are not alone! But now the question is – so what now?

Here on the college admission side of things, we are very busy collecting all the information that you just submitted to us and communicating with you – the applicant. Butler University admission counselors are diligently beginning the process of reviewing every single page of every single application. In a matter of about six weeks we will have read through about 6,000-7,000 applications. That’s a lot of reading! We take this process very seriously and believe it or not, get jazzed to read your application. It is our passion to help you achieve your dreams of going to college and we love reading your stories and hearing about your high school achievements.

You might be asking yourself, “What can I do during this time period, besides nervously waiting on a decision?” Well for starters, stay in contact with us! We always love hearing from you and knowing that you’re still out there. Often times it can be forgotten that we are here to help you and make the entire process easier and less stressful – so take advantage of connecting with us on a regular basis. We try and make this as easy as possible by being available on many different platforms: e-mail; all the numerous social media sites; and of course, our website. Let us know how we can help and take advantage of this down-time to also connect with current Butler students and professors as well as other potential future Butler students. Who knows? You might even find your future roommate while connecting with us on our Facebook page.

Finally, make sure that you’re sending us any new or updated information that we can add to your application file. The more we know about you, the better! Just because our admission deadline has passed doesn’t mean that the information exchange stops. We realize the rapid pace at which things change and that things happen between the time you applied and the time of our decision.

Bottom line: don’t be shy! Invest in the process, stay engaged and don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions. We think you’ll find that all that waiting was definitely worth it. Continue to visit our blog as we will be posting a “What Happens to Your Application” video in the next week or two.

8 Days and Counting…

We are just 8 days away from the Early Action deadline and have already received many completed applications. If you have yet to complete your application or are not sure if we have received all of your required application materials you can:

-Check with your Butler University admission counselor to see if we are still missing anything for your application.

Your Butler admission counselor is also a great person to contact with any questions you might have about things other than your application. If you’re not sure what you should be asking, here are a few common questions that might help your search:

-What type of internship opportunities does Butler offer for my major?
-Can I study abroad regardless of major?  If so, what are the programs and options offered at Butler?
-If I’m not sure what I want to study, what type of programs will Butler offer to help me find the right major?
-Do I have to live on campus?  If so, what are the residential options for students?

 

Important Dates & Deadlines

Early Action…FAFSA…Regular Decision? What to submit, and when to send it…

Since we are less than a month from when the Application for Admission and Freshmen Scholarships is due, we thought this might be a good time to recap the Butler admission timeline.

important datesNovember 1 - Early Action Deadline
This deadline brings with it many benefits for both admission and scholarship consideration:

  • Early Notification Date. All admission decisions are sent on December 15.
  • Scholarship Eligibility. While scholarships are available for both admission deadlines, the full amount of awards are only available for the November 1 deadline.
  • Honors Program. To be eligible to apply to the Honors Program, a student must have a complete Early Action application by November 1.

February 1st- Regular Decision

While the Office of Admission does encourage students to apply by November 1, you can still submit a complete application if you miss the Early Action Deadline.  Students who apply for regular decision will receive their admission shortly after February 15.

March 1st- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

This document is not needed for admission or scholarship consideration, but is required if you are interested in applying for Grant, Loan or Federal Work Study eligibility.  If the document is sent to Butler by March 1, you will be sent a complete Financial Aid Notification by March 15.

May 1st- National Candidate Reply Deadline

You can certainly accept your admission offer early and begin to register for classes/complete housing contracts; however, Butler does not require a student to submit a final enrollment decision until May 1.

 

Fall Checklist for High School Seniors

Fall Checklist for High School SeniorsSchool has been back in session for over a month now. For seniors, this year will be exciting, busy and full of memories that will never be forgotten. By late September, high school seniors should be narrowing down where they want to go to college and what their major will be.

It’s likely that you might be feeling overwhelmed with the entire college search process. That is why we’re giving you the Fall Checklist for High School Seniors to use as a reference and organization tool:

  • Be aware of application deadlines. Butler’s Early Action I deadline is November 1. You can apply by visiting www.butler.edu/apply.
  • Make sure to proofread and fully complete each application. Give yourself plenty of time to finalize your application and essay.
  • Continue to take a full load of college-prep courses. The classes you take in high school and the grades you earn are important factors in the college admission decision. The minimum requirements for admission consideration at Butler are:
  • English – 4 years
  • Mathematics – 3 years (4 years for biology, chemistry, pharmacy and physician assistant applicants)
  • Laboratory Science – 3 years (4 years for biology, chemistry, pharmacy and physician assistant applicants)
  • Social Studies/History – 2 years
  • Foreign Language – 2 years of the same language
  • Keep your grades up. We do require an end-of-the-year transcript, so there is no room to slack.
  • Visit campus. If you haven’t already, visit Butler University! It’s a great way to see if a school will be a good fit for you.
  • Explore scholarship options. Butler University offers various scholarships, but don’t forget about outside scholarships. You can search for alternate scholarship opportunities on sites such as fastweb.com, cappex.com, zinch.com and scholarships.com.
  • Don’t forget about recommendations. Give your college recommendation forms to the teachers that you have chosen, along with self-addressed, stamped envelopes so your teachers can send them directly to the colleges of your choice.
  • Register for the ACT and SAT tests as necessary. At Butler, we take your highest sub score from each exam and add those together for your final score. That way we review you at your best. Remember to have your scores sent straight to Butler University (especially if you are taking the ACT or SAT in October). We want to have all your scores on-hand before making an admission decision.
  • Connect with your admission counselor. Reach out to your Butler University admission counselor via phone, email, Facebook and Twitter (yes, a few of us are on Twitter too). View our interactive map to find your admission counselor’s contact information.

Asking for Letters of Recommendation

It’s the year you’ve been waiting all your life for and it’s finally here. With all the “lasts” you’re trying to squeeze in, the last football game, the last Homecoming dance, the last Halloween party and the last yearbook, it can be hard to find time to work on one of the most important items on your list; your college application. While the Early Action deadline at Butler University is still another month and half away (November 1), it is important to start working on the application process as soon as you can.

For an application to be considered complete, you must submit the following on or before November 1.

  • Academic achievement in high school (GPA, class rank, course selection, grade trends and strength of school)
  • Test scores
  • Secondary School Report completed by your high school counselor
  • Extracurricular activities and leadership experience/potential
  • Essay or personal statement

What you don’t see in the “required” pieces above is a letter (or letters) of recommendation. While they may not be required, we still strongly encourage students submit at least one or two. Why? When we receive your file and are considering you for admission, we want to know the whole you. We realize that you are more than a GPA and test score and want to make an admission decision based on more than those two criteria. That is why we suggest you submit letters of recommendation.

Here are a few tips for getting letters of recommendation:

  1. Ask early. Don’t wait until a week letter of recommendationbefore your application is due. You want to ensure that the people you ask to write a recommendation have plenty of time to submit the letter.
  2. Decide who to ask. This might sound like a no-brainer. Yet, time and time again we see students who have asked the wrong person. You want to make sure you ask someone who likes you, knows you and can give you a positive recommendation. People you can ask: teachers, coaches, mentors, counselors, managers, club sponsors, etc. People you shouldn’t ask: your family.
  3. Provide the person with adequate information. We suggest giving a copy of your resume to those individuals who are writing your letters of recommendation. For instance, you may have a coach recommending you for a particular college. That coach might only know that you do that one sport. They might not be aware that you also work part-time, work on the yearbook committee, are SGA president and volunteer at the local homeless shelter on the weekends. By providing this important information, they can get a better sense of all that you do.
  4. Make sure they know what school they should be writing it for. Enough said.
