Exploratory Studies Program

Undecided about your major? You’re not alone. At Butler, you don’t have to declare a major right away. Rather than starting down a path you’re unsure about, here you can explore your options and find the best fit for your values, interests, personality, gifts and goals.

Because so many students change majors one or more times, our Exploratory Studies program can help you get it right the first time.

We help you identify interests, explore academic options, learn about the career development process and gather information about professions that interest you. And we don’t just point you in a direction; our academic advisors really work with you in your decision-making processes.

Some of the services and programs we provide are:

  • Individualized, proactive academic advising/counseling
  • Exploratory Studies Class (LC 103) – focuses on decision-making, self-assessment, academic exploration of a wide range of possible majors, minors and electives as well as career development
  • Self-assessment through standardized tools (e.g. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator)
  • Opportunities to interview faculty members from various disciplines and visit classes of interest
  • Job shadowing to gain exposure to various professions of interest
  • Workshops and guest speakers covering a variety of relevant topics
  • Exploratory residence hall unit in Schwitzer Hall

Additional Exploratory Options

In addition to the comprehensive option for students who want to explore all their options, Butler offers three other exploratory tracks. So, if you know the general area you’d like to pursue, but not necessarily the specific major this option allows you to target your search within a subject area:

  • Exploratory Business
  • Exploratory Education
  • Exploratory Natural Sciences

Each Exploratory Studies option provides introductory classes for  students to get acquainted with that area of study.
