Program Specific Questions

Q: How long is the program and what will I be expected to do during that time?

A: Selected candidates are invited to participate in a three-year program, which begins the summer before your sophomore year. This program provides experiences across three different UnitedHealthcare sales roles as well as access to an exciting Marketing and Risk Management and Insurance curriculum at Butler. Throughout the duration of this immersive program, you will:

  • Learn about marketing, sales, and leadership within the context of the insurance sales industry.
  • Develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for success in the insurance sales industry.
  • Gain exposure to UnitedHealthcare's corporate culture.
  • Receive personal and professional mentorship from both Butler and UnitedHealthcare mentors.
  • Support UnitedHealthcare in providing excellence in service and support.
  • Maintain an established minimum number of work hours and participate in year-round engagement with UnitedHealthcare.

Q: Will I receive pay for each of the work experiences?

A: Throughout the program, you will receive competitive compensation for participation in each of the work experiences.

Q: When will I complete each individual work experience?

A: You will serve as a Sales Support Specialist the summer before and throughout your sophomore year of college. You will then transition to the Product Advisor role the summer before your junior year of college and will remain in that role until graduation from Butler. You can learn more about the work experiences here.

Q: Will my work experiences at UnitedHealthcare while in college be remote, in-person, or a combination of both?

A: Work experiences with UnitedHealthcare may be a combination of remote and in-person. While at Butler, you may have access to a campus workspace to operate out of during the school year. During the summer months, you may have the opportunity to work onsite at an Indianapolis-based UnitedHealthcare office. In-person and work opportunities are contingent upon health and safety guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: Where will I live over the summer? Will housing be provided?

A: UnitedHealthcare recognizes that housing, particularly during the full-time summer experience, may be a challenge. For students whose permanent address is more than 30 miles from the Indianapolis office and who do not otherwise have summer housing, UnitedHealthcare has housing options available.

Q: What if I decide after starting the program that I am no longer interested in participating?

A: If you decide you no longer would like to participate in the program, you should engage with your UnitedHealthcare program manager to discuss the path forward.

Q: Which job(s) does the United Healthcare Academy prepare me for at UnitedHealthcare?

A: The Academy will introduce you to the insurance sales industry and prepare you to secure a full-time position as a Product Advisor with UnitedHealthcare immediately following graduation. Through participation in the program, you will develop a hybrid skillset across communications, business administration, insurance and risk management, professional selling, and sales management. Upon completion of the Academy, you will be prepared to help individuals meet their insurance needs through a consultative sales approach. After accepting a position at UnitedHealthcare, Academy graduates will be provided with a full set of benefits, continue to have access to a plethora of professional development opportunities, and may later be eligible to pursue other highly sought after career pathways within UnitedHealthcare.
