Care Team<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of our collective commitment to fostering a caring and supportive community, we want to introduce\u2014or reintroduce\u2014you to the <strong>Assessment and Care Team (ACT)<\/strong>. This university-wide team is dedicated to identifying, assessing, and responding to concerns about students who may be struggling academically, emotionally, or behaviorally, or who may pose a risk to themselves or others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-mission\">Our Mission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Butler University Assessment and Care Team (ACT) is a university-wide team of appointed staff and faculty responsible for identifying, assessing, and responding to concerns and disruptive behaviors by students who struggle academically, emotionally, or behaviorally, or who present a risk to the health or safety of the university or its members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-submit-a-student-of-concern-report\">Submit a Student of Concern Report<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most effective ways to alert the ACT about a student of concern is to complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/butler-advocate.symplicity.com\/collections\/student_of_concern_reports\"><strong>Student of Concern Report<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(formerly known as a CARE Report) online form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/butler-advocate.symplicity.com\/collections\/student_of_concern_reports\">Student of Concern Report Form &#8212; Click Here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This form is sent directly to Jules Grable, the Director of Student Advocacy and Chair of the ACT.&nbsp; You will receive an email confirming receipt of your submission.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please know that while there may also be a request for additional information or clarification, we may not be able to share specifics about how the report is handled as we work to support the student of concern. what makes things better is connection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this video<\/a> from Brene Brown about empathy vs. sympathy.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use with I-Statements.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed that you haven\u2019t been hanging out with us as much.&nbsp; Is everything okay?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI feel like you\u2019ve been a little on edge lately.&nbsp; I\u2019m here to talk, if that\u2019s something that you\u2019d like to do.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check On Basic Needs.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do they feel safe in the residence\/on campus?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do they have any physical injuries that they are concerned about?<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use Active Listening Techniques.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pay attention &#8211; show through your verbal acknowledgements and body language that you are listening and care about what they have to say.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask questions about how they are feeling &#8211; keep the focus on their feelings about what happened, instead of asking about the specifics of what happened.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give them options &#8211; ask them what they would like to do every step of the way, for big things and small things<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflect back- once they have made a choice, reflect back to them that you support them and will help them move forward with that choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Share Your Reporting Obligations<\/strong>.&nbsp; If you plan on submitting a <a href=\"https:\/\/butler-advocate.symplicity.com\/collections\/student_of_concern_reports\">Student of Concern Report<\/a> or are obligated to make a report to Title IX, share that information with the student.&nbsp; Reassure them that they will not be in any trouble and they are in charge of whether they engage with support services or not.&nbsp; Be transparent about what you plan to share.<br>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We recognize that this might not always be something that you feel comfortable sharing with the student that you are submitting a report.&nbsp;
