This decision is made by the Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President in coordination with the Chief of Public Safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the campus remains open during adverse weather, employees must use their best judgment when it comes to commuting to and from the workplace. They should not endanger themselves nor ignore the statements of local officials about traveling during adverse weather. Staff and faculty should make every effort to notify their supervisor if they cannot get to work or plan to leave early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will notify the campus of any delays or suspended operations as soon as possible and do our best to make announcements no later than 6:00 AM. Notifications are made through&nbsp;<a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\" data-ogsc=\"\" data-safelink=\"true\" title=\"www.butler.edu\" href=\"http:\/\/www.butler.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.butler.edu<\/a>, local TV stations, email notifications to Butler email addresses, and voicemail and text message alerts through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.butler.edu\/public-safety\/dawg-alert\/\">Dawg Alert<\/a>. To sign up for Dawg Alert notifications, log into your&nbsp;<a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\" data-safelink=\"true\" title=\"my.butler\" data-ogsc=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/my.butler.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my.butler<\/a>&nbsp;account, select <em>All Resources<\/em> and then <em>Dawg Alert<\/em>. Please note, to receive immediate Dawg Alert text notifications for any situation on campus, you must enter a valid cell phone number; home phones and office phones will only receive a voice message.<br><br>There are two winter weather designations used by University officials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-academic\">Academic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Remote Learning<\/strong>: Rather than delay opening of in-person classes in cases of extreme weather as we have done in the past, <strong>all<\/strong> classes for the entire day will be held remotely. This change is being implemented to accommodate faculty and commuter students who may find it difficult to attend a remote class in the morning and then a class on campus a short time later. On remote learning days, testing must be rescheduled for students with accommodations through Student Disability Services. In extremely rare circumstances and only with the College Dean\u2019s permission, classes may be held in person at the end of a remote learning day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-non-academic-university-operations\">Non-Academic University Operations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Delay<\/strong>:&nbsp;This designation will be for the business operation of the University and does not impact the academic schedule. If weather creates a safety issue for staff commuting to work, we may delay opening until a specific time. Essential employees are still expected to report at their normal times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Suspended<\/strong>:&nbsp;All non-essential, on-campus operations have been suspended for the day; staff will transition to remote work until further notice. Critical campus services needed to serve students, like campus dining, police, and some maintenance, will remain open. If you are an employee and unsure of your status, please contact your immediate supervisor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Facilities and Operations will begin snow removal shortly after snowfall begins. Snow service priorities may shift depending on campus events and activities. Generally, the team begins by clearing residential areas while ensuring access to key buildings that support students\u2014even when classes are moved online. Areas around buildings hosting external visitors or events are also prioritized. Such circumstances may include, but not be limited to, a report or suspicion that the missing person may be the victim of foul play, has expressed suicidal thoughts, is drug dependent, is in a life-threatening situation, or has been with persons who may endanger the student\u2019s welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All contact information provided by students&nbsp;<em>for this missing persons procedure<\/em>&nbsp;will be confidential and accessible&nbsp;<em>only<\/em>&nbsp;to authorized campus officials. It will not be disclosed, except to law enforcement personnel in furtherance of a missing person investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-procedures-for-designation-of-missing-person-s-confidential-contact-information\">Procedures for Designation of Missing Person\u2019s Confidential Contact Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will be given the opportunity during each semester to designate an individual or individuals to be contacted by the college no more than 24 hours after the time that the student is determined to be missing. A designation will remain in effect until changed or revoked by the student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students Under the Age of 18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event a student who is not emancipated is determined to be missing pursuant to the procedures set forth below, Butler University is required to notify a custodial parent or guardian no more than 24 hours after the student is determined to be missing, in addition to notifying any additional contact person designated by the student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-official-notification-procedures-for-missing-persons\">Official Notification Procedures for Missing Persons<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any individual on campus who has information that a residential student may be a missing person must notify the Butler University Police Department (BUPD) as soon as possible by calling 317-940-9396. Any individual can also notify:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Community Director<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community Assistants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Resident Assistants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dean of Students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If reported to one of the individuals above, they will notify BUPD for an investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BUPD will gather all essential information about the residential student from the reporting person and from the student&#8217;s acquaintances (description, clothes last worn, where student might be, who student might be with, vehicle description, information about the physical and mental well- being of the student, an up-to-date photograph, class schedule, etc.). Appropriate campus staff will be notified to aid in the search for the student if deemed necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BUPD will notify the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) of the report and possibly request assistance from their Missing Person&#8217;s unit if deemed necessary.
